UNC avoids collapse, enacts revenge on Duke

DURHAM, N.C. - There was no miraculous comeback this time, no heroic shot from freshman Austin Rivers.

Just revenge.

Talent won out -- and that meant that North Carolina did what it was chosen to do, win the ACC regular-season title and also lay claim to a No. 1 overall seed with a fairly resounding victory at Cameron over rival Duke.

The Blue Devils made it interesting in the second half, but only because the margin had grown to 26 points at one point.

Duke had a chance to cut it to single-digits with less than five minutes left, but Rivers missed the front end of a one-and-one -- and the Tar Heels were truly never threatened.

For the first 20 minutes, it was complete dominance in just about every aspect of the game.

But this time was there no meltdown.

North Carolina finishes the regular-season 27-4 and 14-2 in league play. Not what we all expected from the preseason number one team in the land, but the win at Cameron showed that this team is still a legit national title contender.

In case anyone forgot about these guys from Chapel Hill, they may just be Kentucky's biggest roadblock to cutting down the nets in New Orleans.

It's pick your poison now with the Tar Heels on the offensive end without Dexter Strickland. All five starters finished in double-figures and Roy Williams' team put up 88 points.

And the Tar Heels, despite a few bumps in the road, still achieved their first goal -- to win the ACC.

UNC avoids collapse, enacts revenge on Duke

Seriously UNC best team in country....They couldn't beat a group of freshman and sophomores early in the season at UK so you really think they are better than UK now.....UK has shown no weakness all season and the freshman are no longer freshman....They are as complete of a basketball team as I have ever seen at UK........The reality is UK is the team who has improved the most since the 1st meeting.....UNC isn't much different today as they were then....Mostly because the room for improvement was less steep.....They already was a great team and didn't have as much room to get better.............If UK continues to play on the offensive end the way they play defense there is no team in the country who can touch them..... I'm not taking anything away for UNC...I think they are the only team athletic enough to match up with UK....If you would have said UK vs UNC in the finals I would have totallly agreed.....I watched Syracuse play Louisville on Saturday....Not impressed!!!.....Bottom line if UK and UNC play to their potential over the next month then you will see a rematch for the ages....Time will tell......Can't wait for the madness to start.

UNC avoids collapse, enacts revenge on Duke

So pretty much everyone recognizes UNC as the ACC regular seaason champs, including the ACC's website except for Skyhawk.  Thats good enough for me.

The conference tournament winner was "champion" back in the days when only one team from each conference could go to the NCAA's.  That was a long time ago--the ACC just hasn't bothered to "modernize" its thinking.

Of course the regular season has a champion.  Dook sure crows about winning it in those years that they do.  Winning the ACC regular season pretty much insures a high NCAA seed, year in and year out.  That means it's important.

Is anybody seriously suggesting that teams like Duke and Carolina approach the tournament with the same intensity that they did when only the tournament winner could go the NCAA tournament?  Really?

It's like saying, "Let's run a marathon to see who the best is."  Then, when the marathon is over, and everybody has finally finished, everybody gets to line up even again and run a 50-yard dash to see who really won the marathon.

Stop moaning, Dook fans.  Your team got spanked despite the officials' best efforts (Dook got outrebounded by 20, shot 21 3's, and still shot more free throws than UNC).  You won't find those numbers anywhere else in the country outside Durham.

Yes, the ACC's website has a bad habit of not editing the Associated Press' copy. I'm not sure why they don't check that one, it happened last year too. It is a pretty bad mistake on their part.

It's really funny that on the ACC's front web page they have picture from the game and the caption reads in part:  "North Carolina clinched the ACC regular season title with a win on the road at Duke..."

Yes, on the ACC's on web site...

Although I do agree that the bylaws do not recognize this...

The league does not prevent schools from claiming an unofficial title, but it does not recognize any regular season champion after 1961. Carolina has always tried to ignore that so Dean Smith could hold his team back in ACC play and still claim a title, but the league does not recognize these as official.
And of course, since Roy Williams does everything Dean Smith did, it follows that Carolina still continues to ignore conference bylaws. Earlier in the year, Mike Krzyzewski confirmed that the league still does not crown a regular season champion when Syracuse and Pittsburgh joined the conference.

Really, if there is no regular season title, then why did the announcers keep bringing it up all night??  Why did they show that UNC has 29 ACC regular season titles??
Because the announcers assume that because every other conference has a regular season title, the ACC must have one too. This is false. The ACC chose to eliminate the regular season title after the 1961 season and changed its bylaws to say that the sole champion is the tournament champion. The bylaws have not been changed since then, making the ACC the only Division I conference that does not crown a regular season champion.

The league does not prevent schools from claiming an unofficial title, but it does not recognize any regular season champion after 1961. Carolina has always tried to ignore that so Dean Smith could hold his team back in ACC play and still claim a title, but the league does not recognize these as official.

Really, if there is no regular season title, then why did the announcers keep bringing it up all night??  Why did they show that UNC has 29 ACC regular season titles??  I guess the last 16 games didn't mean anything either, right??

dude that may be the dumbest comment I've ever heard. ACC tourney is bullshit and there are alot of conferences that want to do away with the conference tourney. ACC reg. season champs says it all. It's the complete body of work all year which means way more then winning a conference tourney. unc are the ACC  champs number 29 for the HEELS! Stick to hockey the sport that nobody cares about.
Tell that to the ACC, which has not recognized a regular season champion since 1961. You do not have 29 ACC titles, you have five and you will always have five until the ACC reinstates the regular season title. Nobody has won an ACC regular season championship since North Carolina did it in 1961. It is the only conference in college basketball that does not crown a regular season champion.

So ACC regular season champions says absolutely nothing. It's a fictional title.
