Should BYU get a 1 seed

Personally, not yet. BYU and San Diego State have had good years, but besides beating San Diego State twice, the only other notable win is against Arizona at home. The other number 1 seeds in contention as of right now is Duke, Kansas, Texas, Pitt, Ohio State, Purdue, and San Diego State if they win out and win their tournament. Unless Kansas loses to Missouri and to a non rank team in the Big 12 tournament, they are pretty much guaranteed a number 1 seed. Texas losing yesterday will drop them out for contention for now, but winning out and beating KU again on neutral ground will boost their chances again. Pitt has a good shot at a number 1 seed, and with the Big East, a good Norte Dame could get a number 1 seed if they win out too. If ND wins out, that could allow two number 1 seeds to be from the Big East.

The Big East is considered the best conference in basketball, and seeing them chew up half of the number 1 seeds isn’t unlikely. Likely the other two number 1 seeds will be chewed up by a Big 10 and a Big 12 school. Overall I think BYU lacks the overall resume that the other big conference schools have to be a number 1 seed, but BYU will have a good argument if they win out and get a little help from the other conferences woes; however, currently I think the number 1 seeds are chewed up by more deserving teams.

Should BYU get a 1 seed

Isn't is great that your whole basis for "overall resume" is simply because of the names of the teams that BYU has and has not played?  Come on.  Doesn't RPI, SOS, and victories against top RPI and ranked teams consitute a resume?  Seriously, this argument has no point whatsoever, because no matter how many games a team like BYU (or SDSU for that matter) win, how convincingly they win, or how high their RPI and SOS rankings get, people like you will never be conviced.  Even if I team like this made a run to the final four, people would probably call it "luck" or some other excuse.

In the end, the only thing people care about is the name on the front of the jersey - nothing else.

Should BYU get a 1 seed

I think a little update is needed, but with Pitt losing today will change the argument a bit. Now Pitt could win out and the Big East tournament which will keep them in the discussion for a 1 seed, but right now I consider them a 2 seed after today. This Pitt loss helps BYU secure a number 1 seed. I'm not denying the BYU hasn't played well or beat some good teams, but let me emphasize how their schedule isn't as tough as a Big East or the Big 12. San Diego State and BYU will probably be the only teams representing the MWC, unless UNLV is able to squeeze in there, but it's too early and hard to predict that right now.

Otherwise that is it for the conference to be considered tourney worthy. BYU has shown they are a very good team, but not enough to be a 1 seed without some help. If Pitt, ND, and possibly Villanova or Gerogetown will get a 1 seed if they win out and the Big East tournament. Normally the Big East champion gets a 1 seed, and some years they don't deserve it, but they do this year considering how well they have played against other conferences. Then the Big 12 has had good teams this year, and KU will probably be the only 1 seed from the Big 12, but if Texas wins out they have a good chance too. Currently I don't think BYU should get a 1 seed yet, but the way things have turned out with Pitt and Texas losing recently, their chances for a 1 seed have gotten better.

Should BYU get a 1 seed

The win against Arizona was on a 'neutral' floor as it was on the Jazz's homecourt (can't remember what they call that building now). The St. Mary's win was also on a neutral court. BYU also has the most true road wins of any team this year. Is there a midwest bias along with an east coast bias now? Smile

Should BYU get a 1 seed

BYU  is 8-1 against the RPI top 50 which is better than any of these guys.  To say that BYU doesn't have great wins is just nonsense.  One win that is very overlooked is Utah State who is 25-3 and has an RPI of 18!  I know all the "experts" can accept it but the numbers speak for themselves.  Utah State is a very good team, and BYU is a great team.  It would be a travesty of justice if they don't get a number 1 seed.
