Is talent more important than character?

I decided to write this after I read an article about the Bengal's WR Terrell Owens yesterday on CBS Sports. Terrell Owens left the game in the first quarter of the Bengals and Browns game with a knee injury. The Bengals, who had only managed to win two games prior to yesterday, got the W against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Now I'm not saying the Bengals won because T.O. left the game, he is having a very good season statistics wise, but it did pose me to this thought (And also made me think how the Bengals season would have went if they didn't sign T.O.). No matter how much talent the guy has (and he is a monster physically) he still seems to cause trouble everywhere he lands and just can't seem to keep his mouth shut. If I am the GM or the coach of an NFL team I am not signing the guy. To me it is not worth all of the drama and shenanigans that comes with signing a drama queen WR such as T.O. So my questoin to you sports fans is this, would you rather have the undeniable athletic ability on your team at the risk of having to put up with the "drama-filled baggage," or go with a less talented guy that has good character?

Is talent more important than character?

I would be more inclined to pass on a player of TO's persona, I think that most would after his history. I think that a player with good character (even when less talented) is undervalued today. Football is a team sport and requires more than one player doing a job on the field for a positive outcome. Sounds pretty "Typical Sports Movie -ish" but players with good character build up their team mates as opposed to breaking down the unit (i.e. Philly and the McNabb situation).

I agree with you that he is a great talent, but to say if you want to win you should sign him is a stretch. The Bengals are tied for the second worst team in the league, and they have T.O.

Great post King,

I think with the Patriots especially is that they have a great coach that I truly believe gets the absolute most out of his players and staff.

Great thread idea.  I say no way.  Like Randy Moss having a million dollar talent and a ten cent head. Everyone in the football world questioned coach when he sent Moss to the Vikings.  Since then, the Patriots have been on fire.  They get it done because every man from Brady to the rookies all come to work ready to play and ready to improve as much as they can.

The thing about charachter guys is they are coachable.  Talent is great, but without focus and determination, it means very little.

All 32 teams should consider signing Terrell Owens. He is (and always has been) one of the most talented wide receivers in the NFL, and any team that wants to win should offer him at least a 1 year contract.
