Trolls and Stalkers

This entry is not directly focused on sports but more on posters that choose to disrupt threads on CBSSports.com

There are many adjectives that could be applied to these folks the nicer ones being trolls or stalkers. They have many methods to gain some kind of perverse pleasure in angering or drawing others into losing their tempers or getting warned. There are some threads that are dedicated to slamming one another which is okay - you get what you ask for. Unfortunately, these trolls do not limit their bile to these threads instead they stalk people on sports threads or off topic threads where people just want to have good natured banter.

Some trolls have banded together and gang up on individual posters. Some posters try to combat them using their own methods but usually this is a futile effort since they have not invested the time to study the terms of service so closely they know how to use them to their advantage.

The trolls also communicate to the message board administrators so that they can have warnings removed or to lobby to get other posters who respond to their taunts and baiting in trouble through warnings.

These trolls rely on the bully mentality of ganging up on a poster. I’m sure many of you have witnessed this type of infantile behavior. The trolls rarely can stand up on their own in a tit for tat but rely on numbers to hound their prey. The trolls also use multiple ID’s which is permissible under the terms of service but provides them two advantages. One is that they can have multiple reports issued against an otherwise innocuous message and secondly it spreads out the warnings they do receive over a number of ID’s so that they can avoid being banned.

The most insidious trolls are those that befriend regulars on a thread in order to strike at others. Once a victim responds, the trolls will then cry foul and enlist the aid of their new found friends. However, one their hypocritical behavior is discovered they turn on their new friends that had just been defending them.

Gutless behavior by persons who have low self-esteem that want to drag people down to their level.

Known Trolls and Stalkers need not respond to this entry - your messages will be removed if deemed offensive.

Cool

COMMUNITY SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Managing Troll infestations
1. Ignore trolls whenever possible.
2. When ignoring does not work, report persistent trolls to the admins.
3. If warnings/bannings do not work; engagement may be necessary. (see 4-7)
4. Honesty is the best policy; do not lie or exaggerate - stick to the facts.
5. Acknowledge inadvertent compliments with a thank you - take the high road and be objective.
6. Admit if you make a mistake or commit an error - the facts are your friend when engaging a troll.
7. Be alert that the trolls will lie or use omission and will attempt to paint you as a troll - persevere and be patient history and the facts are on your side.
8. Go back to ignore mode. Make sure the trolls are not on your favorites list - leave the stalking to them.
9. Always remain patient. Trolls are pathetic creatures that merit pity not anger.

Hope this helps those of you with a troll infestation.

Trolls and Stalkers

On the B & G it is obvious who the three people creating new SN or digging up old ones. I'm on ignore mode and once in a blue moon type a "SLAVE TO THE RYTHEM" post. Because that all it is.

Trolls and Stalkers

Good morning, the topic of todays entry will be "warning trolls."  One disclaimer - I am neither endorsing nor condemning the use of the report abuse function.

This is both a label, many times used derisively, but is also a tactic. Some people define a warning troll as one that goes from thread to thread and just randomly reports people to the administrators for fun.

Communicating on sports message boards brings a lot of people together that are often very passionate about the teams they root for. Some good natured taunting between different fan bases is expected even encouraged. However, the message boards does have a broad audience including young people so limits are set through the terms of service and moderation guidelines. CBSSPORTS uses a small group of moderators to try to keep order. The first line of defense is to ignore the posters that bother you. However some are persistent and step over the bounds of decency. On these message boards a report function is made available. However, if the report function is abused this itself can result in a warning from the administrators so beware of randomly reporting posters. Here is the verbatim description of the report abuse option extracted from the moderation guidelines:

All CBSSports.com community users have the option to report abuse for posts containing one or more of the following: Offensive or obscene language, personal attacks, racist characterizations, ethnic slurs, sexist commentary, pornographic content, commercial advertising, stalking, inappropriate slurs or impersonating another person or entity.

All reported abuse posts will be reviewed by an administrator. Warnings will be issued for legitimate abuse. Repeated fake reports can result in a drop in the issuing user's reputation. Please ensure you're reporting items that violate our and .

Whenever a troll or stalker has a message deleted - no matter how vile - they will often howl and whine that a "warning troll" has reported them. If they have made a personal attack against a particular poster, they will automatically accuse that person of reporting the abuse to the administrators. The fact is that the trolls and stalkers do not really know who reported them. What the trolls fail to acknowledge is that administrators sometimes monitor threads that have known troll infestations and no one may have even reported them.  The trolls also do not seem to acknowledge that many people may find the filth they post to be offensive so multiple people may have reported them for their abuse. In fact, trolls exploit the use of multiple ID's to report posters that are in a tit for tat with one of their friends to get otherwise relatively innocuous messages deleted that embarrass the troll. They do like to coordinate their movements as trolls do have a brutish cunning.  Luckily, the administrators are aware of this tactic and will usually ignore this type of baiting. So if you get frustrated with a troll and engage him in a tit for tat - do not count on getting just the trolls messages removed  you could end up getting your messages removed too.

One way to identify a probable troll is to see which ones howl the loudest about "warning trolls."  This usually signals that a troll has been caught violating the terms of service and is upset. They want to blame someone else for being punished for their own actions.

I don't get angry with these trolls. I just LMAO at them. Wink

Trolls and Stalkers

Hey Davido13,

Boy is this a great thread.  I recently fell into the game tracker troll trap on the Lions chat.  One in particular just hated on all Detroit sports team, so I would try to toss back the insults only to be called an internet tough guy, blah, blah.  Anyhow, I actually favorited this troll and now enjoy reading all the fights and vicious posts both sent and received.

My strategy now is to actually try to be kind, get to know personal information and post well wishes to the trolls family and sports teams.  I think it actually confuses them.

Trolls and Stalkers

How about them gametracker trolls?  Some of the most infamous breeds of trolls on cbssports.  Each sport has particular standouts although some game tracker trolls migrate from sport to sport and game to game. You know the type, you have been following a baseball or hockey game with good natured banter and discussion going on; another game ends and then the gametracker troll arrives.

Incessant foul language, name calling of players, taking discussions out of context, unprovoked attacks on posters they don like ensues. The moment one of these gametracker trolls posts a message there is usually a collective sigh from the community - here we go again.

One particular stalker troll received multiple warnings while on a baseball game game tracker thread. He then had the audacity to complain to the administrators because I was on the thread and that neither team was my favorite team. This was a pretty funny situation since the stalker troll was mocked by fans from his own Orioles team who did not like his nasty messages. This was also the first time all season that he had posted on one of their games since he apparently had seen me posting on the game thread and followed me onto that game thread - it was not my first time posting so actually had fans from the stalker trolls favorite team asking him why he was making unprovoked personal attacks.

These stalker trolls also like to take things out of context. As we all know there is often lag between games being played, the television broadcast, streaming versions of the game and the cbssports game tracker. One stalker troll is so stupid he does not realize that there are time lags so that some posts on the game threads may not match what the cbssports gametracker is showing. One example is from a Pirates game during the baseball season. Bases were loaded on the television broadcast, and I was calling for a grand slam. However, the game tracker was lagging and only showed two men on. The stalker troll then spent months posting messages on 10-15 different threads that I did not know what a grand slam was. The fool continued with this stupidity well after the baseball season was over. LOL.

Game tracker trolls are usually dealt with pretty quickly by the admins since many people will not tolerate their disruption of the near-real time game threads. The stalker trolls will continue to come onto these threads out of spite and seem to revel in their negativity - when it is really a feeble cry for help.

Trolls and Stalkers

Greetings to the new Year!

A number of troll and stalker tactics have been described. While not strictly a tactic, one characteristic of trolls and stalkers is their perseverance. Here is a string of troll messages to give a representative example:

1. The troll is upset because he has had a post deleted. [NOTE: thanks to whomever did report the post, obviously it was very offensive since it was removed, I was not engaged in a conversation with this troll at the time so imagine it was rather unpleasant words this troll chose to use that were removed]
December 30, 2011 10:35 pm

Funny.....I mention the name Davido in a post and BAM......REMOVED by The Admins.

How could that have happened?

Did someone WHINE to the admins?

If So....who could it have been?

2. The troll remains upset and since no one has responded to his lament, he continues to pick at the scab. ['across the street' is a reference to a thread that I post on a regular basis]

December 31, 2011 1:47 pm
Jokes are across the street.
3. One of the troll's friends advises him to let it go. [NOTE: I've removed his name to save the troll embarrassment; he suffers from low self-esteem so no need to highlight his deficiencies to the general cbssports message board.]

December 31, 2011 2:21 pm

Don't dwell on it X... They are content as they are, you can't police the world so enjoy your own.

4. The troll is trying to narrow his range of targets. This particular troll has attacks dozens of people and was saying that there were four posters he identified by name that other posters should oust so that he would return. This ploy failed since the posters actually suggested that he stay away instead - unfortunately, the troll has not followed that advice [see Bret Favre tactic]

December 31, 2011 6:02 pm

There is only 1 or 2 over there stirring up the pot.....and we all know who that is....

Mr. Blog boy

5. Nearly 24 hours later and as New Year's Eve approaches the troll again grouses about the post he had removed. [I had mentioned going to a high school basketball tournament just before xmas on another thread - apparently this was the subject of the message the troll crafted that was removed - this troll is persistent]

December 31, 2011 6:04 pm

I had a post removed last night after mentioning you know who at the high school basketball game.

wonder who that could have been..........

6. None of his "friends" respond, so again the troll pleads for a reply. Why should this troll care what I did the week before?

December 31, 2011 8:17 pm

Hey boys...can I play along?

Do we have warning trolls in the wire.

I posted something last night that Davidso said he did over the week......and it got removed by the admins.

Wonder who cried to em?

Any guesses?

7. One of the troll's friends finally responds after repeated pleas over a 24 hour period. The friend simply denies that he was not the one that reported the troll to the admins. The troll is now getting unsure of himself - remember he does have low self-esteem - and asks if he is sure, perhaps he thought one of his friends pulled a prank on him.

December 31, 2011 8:21 pm

Sure as hell wasn't me.

December 31, 2011 8:23 pm

Are you sure?

As much as we are called warning trolls by the mentally inept I would have figured it was.

8. The troll's friend provides some good advice. Does anyone think the troll will follow the advice of two of his friends?

December 31, 2011 10:26 pm

We need to just stay over here X. The stupid comments are really getting to me. Those guys talk big and know nothing about computers.

Now, I initially labeled this tactic or characteristc 'perseverance.' However on considering one of its defintions: ability to bear difficulties calmly and without complaint; this is an inaccurate label. This troll is neither calm nor without complaint. A better description is that the troll is displaying a persistent disturbing preoccupation - obsession.

Trolls and Stalkers

I decided to go tit for tat for a little bit with a band of trolls last night. Of course, the problem with that is that it contributes to the disruption of the thread. of course ignoring the trolls does not help since they will continue to post until they get a reaction from someone. A similar situation to when women react to a babies crying - if they have recently had a child they may spontaneously express milk. Wink

So a reminder for those of you that decide to engage the trolls - try to be mindful of the other regulars to whatever thread:

December 31, 2011 12:07 am
The shame of it is that when you followed me onto this thread a couple months ago - every single person on here welcomed you with open arms. In a short few months you have managed to frustrate people that liked you. A couple of them outright dislike you now.

I don't claim that all these people like me nor do I crave their attention. I do try to be respectful of the regulars on here and have not stabbed anyone in the back.  Most will continue to be nice and civil toward you because that is their nature. But do not mistake someone beng nice as being weak or blind to your antics - same applies to me.

You are fond of providing unsolicited advice, so thought I'd return the favor. It will do your soul good to try to be more positive in your interactions with people. It is normal and healthy to greet people each day and exchange small talk. At some point, you will realize that continuous sniping at others is not good and can result in a response. At 47 years of age, you still have time to learn this.

Take care and hope you have a safe and fun (not necessarily an oxymoron) New Years.

Trolls and Stalkers

Eugene - You are right. These gutless wonders are not willing to go one on one but rely on ganging up or they try to turn others against you by complaining to the admins.

Another troll method is the "copy cat" tactic. Some trolls have some originality but the stupider trolls have to use the material of others because they really are dullards. Here is an example:

A troll that tries to claim he does not read this blog posted this message today. He wants to send PM's so he can characterize my issues with "the other bar and it's regular posters" A convenient way of spreading lies he is afraid to come out to say what he thinks because he knows his words can easily be contradicted by the truth:

I'd really not like to embarass him here. If you would like tonight I'll send you a PM and outline his issues with the other bar and it's regular posters.
The same gutless wonder obviously wanted to mimic my words:

Trolls and Stalkers

Eugene - I will keep preaching on. One troll that will remain anonymous, to save him the embarrassment, has demanded that the admins remove this blog and that I be warned for making a personal attack against him.

If you dish it, then you should be able to take it without having to run to mommy aka the Administrator.
Hi Davido,

Who runs to the administrator's? No one really does that, do they?... Would that not be a little lot like snitching? I didn't think any of our posters would stoop to such level's... I don't think CBS has ever done anything that was remotely helpful or useful to anyone without screwing it up... I thought everyone knew that. I must be really not paying attention to what's going on around here. Do you have any documentation of this snitching? No, never mind, I don't think you've ever lied in the past. I was just curious about this blog because I kept hearing about it on the AFB&G. I'm disappointed we can't just enjoy the threads we choose without someone crapping in the frontyard... we used to have picnics there. Even my dog wouldn't crap in his own yard. It's just unsanitary, don't you think?
Amelas1,

Davido and I are two seperate id's and people altogether. I am in total agreement with Davido's posts about trolls who dish it but can't take it and go run to the Administrator because they do not like it when challenged on their idiotic comments, and made my agreement with his opinion known with my post.

I guess you are being sarcastic in your disbelief about people that run and snitch to the Administrator, but it unfortunately happens. I am here on CBS Sports.com mainly for the fantasy sports since Sporting News.com did away with theirs at the end of 2009, and as part of it do offer my opinions/analysis on different players in most sports. I have no problem with people disagreeing with me on my opinions, or the back and forth banter that sometimes takes place with it. However what sucks is when people challenge you, you reply to them and when they can't get anybody to agree with them or more people disgaree with them they go to the Administrator for help.

Since you asked for proof of people snitching I will submit to you the case of Miguel Olivo of the Seattle Mariners from earlier this year. I provided my own insights about Olivo's fantasy value and some clown who did not like my opinion started to challenge me on it. When another poster who supported my opinion started to challenge that clown and the clown could not get anybody to support his whacked out view he went and ran to the Administrator and had as many of the posts opposing him wiped out as possible. For visible proof here is the link to what I am talking about: . Pay close attention to the multiple times it says "Post Deleted By Administrator". By the way where I am from, The Bronx, there is an expression that goes like this: "snitches gets stitches", so you can see my disdain for that (snitching) as well.

I too am disappointed that sports which is supposed to be fun and entertaining and a temporary escape from the daily pressures of life can be turned into something unpleasurable.

Don't know who runs the administrators but they are constrained by enforcing the terms of service and moderation guidelines. There is some subjectivity in their decsions as they do allow some language and actions go in the off topic threads that are not tolerated in the sports thread. It is this bit of leniency that the trolls take advantage of. The administrators are more permissive in the off topic threads so that like-minded posters could exchange insults or crudities on "slam" threads such as "Make Something Up About the Person Above You" thread. However, the trolls have exploited this so that they can invade other threads that were intended for just idle chatter without the obscenities or childish insults.  The band of trolls uses malicious compliance by taking their negative behavior right to the line of breaching the terms of service without actually getting a warning. They live by the letter of the terms not their spirit.

As mentioned in the post below, one of the whelp trolls cannot control himself. Within hours of claiming that "no body reads his posts" and that he ignores me the puppy troll posted the following messages about me. Very pathetic really, he craves attention so much he will keep posting messages trying to get me or others to respond:

December 28, 2011 10:48 pm

Sniff Sniff......and Davey is being mean too..........whaaaaa  &nb
sp; whaaaaaaa.

December 29, 2011 4:12 pm

I do work a little... as little as possible.

You better not be on the government payroll.....Davido will get made and post another 6 year old directive saying that they don't like workers on social media sites while on the job.

December 29, 2011 8:57 pm

Jesus H Christ....is ROK still crying. He's been doing so since this morning. right after he said "Hello" to everyone....right after he told us all what was for breakfast....right after he finally said hello to Davido when no one else would and right before he trolled the other bar and grill thread and call everyone over there a TROLL.

December 29, 2011 9:09 pm

Now, if SeeBS will allow any more posting here....

They are probably tired of all your crying to.

Why don't you scurry over to Davido's pathetic BLOG where you two can have a whimper fest together.....at least then Davido can say someone other that him posted there.
