It’s now safe to say that Lane Kiffin is no longer the only head coach to offer a scholarship to a recruit without a learner’s permit.

While many coaches are just beginning to turn their attention to the class 2012, Auburn head coach Gene Chizik extended an offer to class of 2015 quarterback David Sills, his quarterback coach Steve Clarkson told the Los Angeles Times.

Sills famously committed to USC after being verbally offered a scholarship by Kiffin while still in middle school last February. The then 13-year-old Sills had not even played a varsity football game at the time of the offer.

Sills is the latest in a long line of quarterbacks tutored by Clarkson, who lists Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Montana and Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart among his pupils.

In response to Sills' early scholarship offer, a new NCAA rule was proposed last year that would prohibit verbal scholarships offers before July 1st of a recruit’s junior year. The proposal was defeated at the recent NCAA convention in San Antonio. A student-athlete may receive a written offer after August 1st of their senior season.

The 6-foot-1, 160 pound Sills led the Red Lion Christian Academy (Del.) varsity to a 6-3 record last season as an 8th grader.

Auburn also extended an offer to teammate Kenny Bigelow in late January, a sophomore defensive lineman.

Update: Sills' father tells the Times that the Tigers did not extend an offer. Clarkson maintained that Auburn has extended a scholarship offer to a different Times reporter.

Goodness gracious this kid is in the eigth grade and he is almost big as me! He is going to be an absolute monster in four years if he is already leading a varsity team to a winning record.  I pray to God this kids parents enroll him at Mater Dei when he gets to high school.  And we have scouts letting him know were interested until he graduates with no foul play involved! Everyone else is just jealous we got to him first if he lives up to his potential.  Kid would be a great answer for us to start the post sanction era.

I understand that his dad asked Nick Saban for a Porsche, and Nick refused;
so he called Gene and Gene said no problem.

Jesus Christ. Did you even pass elementary school? I'm going to go out on a limb and say college was out of the question.

to the katman- You are incredibly dumb and ignorant for thinking that Auburn will get in trouble for Cam Newton.  The NCAA has already investigated the Auburn program and found them guilty of no wrongdoing in the matter.  What Cecil Newton was a loophole in the NCAA rules because the Newton families didn't actually receive anything from Auburn University.  Have fun being a bitter USC fan while you are hit with recruiting problems for the next 2 years. And have a nice day

By the time 2015 rolls around Auburn won't be able to recruit many top notch players becasue of the heavy handed NCAA sanctions/penalties against them for playing Cam Newton.

Actually it sounds like a hs coach is trying to pump up his program and the kid's father is merely telling the truth.  Only a moron would consider that "distancing" from Auburn.
