Over the weekend, Edgewood (Ky.) quarterback Zeke Pike made news by getting kicked out of the Badger Sports 7-on-7 event at Pitt. While most of the story centered on the five-star quarterback being tossed because he hit a referee with the ball, MGoBlog.com caught up with Pike to get his side of the story.
"It was really blown all out of proportion," Pike told the website. "They give you a play clock and it was 4th down, our team didn't get set and get the play off in time. They blew the play dead and called turnover on downs. I tossed the ball towards the ref who blew his whistle just giving him the ball. He caught the ball and then the other ref threw his flag and threw me out. It was pretty ridiculous but I just took it, not much I could do. I mean it wasn't worth arguing over, and then we have people tweeting and saying all this nonsense making me look bad."
From Pike and subsequent reports from those at the scene, it seems like the story was just a bit overblown. If anything, the referee could be blamed for being a bit trigger happy on throwing Pike out. Veteran Scout.com reporter Bob Lichtenfels noted in his story on the event that this was the first ejection he had seen in many years covering recruiting.
Pike is ranked 30th in Tom Lemming's Top 100 for 2012 and holds well over 30 scholarship offers.
