Although Utah's move to the Pac-12 was announced well before the class of 2011 signed with the school, the class of 2012 will officially be the Utes' first class in their new conference. As a result, Honolulu (Hawaii) offensive lineman Kiha Sai becomes the first Pac-12 verbal commitment after committing to the school Friday night.
Sai is quite familiar with Utah despite the change in conferences because his brother, Kapua, is already an offensive lineman with the team.
"They've had the Kruger brothers, the Kemoeatu brothers and others so it's going to be cool to be a part of that legacy," Kiha told the Salt Lake Tribune. "I've been to every spring game the last couple years and to play there, I can't wait."
The 6-foot-5, 300 pound Sai is excited to join the school he has been a fan of since seventh grade almost as much as he is to play with his brother.
"He puts pressure on me to be the best player I can be," Sai said. "He's always the one getting the ink, the one reporters want to talk to so I'm always trying to be as good as he is."
Sai did not hold any other offers but was receiving interest from Arizona, Colorado and Idaho State. He is the first commitment for Utah's class of 2012.
