Big 12 Name

Please help me understand why the Big 12 with ten teams is keeping the Big 12 name.  It makes no sense to me.  And the Big Ten will actually be twelve teams soon.  Is the branding that important?  What do you think some alternate names for both conferences could be?  How about the Big Midwest and the Big North?  Any creative alternate conference name ideas out there?
