While most of the state of Georgia is focused on the big upcoming game against Boise State in Atlanta, one recruit delivered some good to anxious fans hours before the big match up. Thompson (Ga.) defensive tackle John Atkins surprised some by putting on a big red Bulldogs' hat Friday morning but became the latest defensive line pick up for Mark Richt's team.

"I told Coach Richt. I called him and when I told him he screamed," Atkins told's Emily Nerland. "I chose Georgia because it's close and my family can come and see games. And once you are a Bulldog, you are a Bulldog forever."

The 6-foot-3, 300-pounder is a big body in the middle for coordinator Todd Grantham's 3-4 defense. Though Atkins will still take official visits to other schools, one of the key reasons why he committed to Georgia was linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti.

"I have a very strong relationship with Coach O," he said. "He wrote me a whole paragraph saying how he liked that I was becoming a Dawg," Atkins said. "I also have a very strong relationship with Ray Drew. He was a big part of the whole recruiting process."

Atkins is the 13th verbal commitment for Georgia in the class of 2012 and third along the d-line.
