Last Thursday UCLA picked up a commitment from Compton (Calif.) Dominguez High offensive lineman Lacy Westbrook and the Bruin coaching staff has followed that up with a verbal pledge from Westbrook's teammate on Tuesday in defensive lineman Damion Turpin.

"Yeah I committed to UCLA," Turpin told 247Sports. "I just decided I would be better to stay closer to home and benefit from the support of my family and friends. The academics at UCLA are top notch which was another factor in my decision."
The 6-foot-3, 250-pound end also held scholarship offers from Colorado, Duke, Hawaii, Nebraska and others. In addition to academics and proximity to home, what the Bruins showed in a recent win over Arizona State was another contributing factor into choosing to commit to the school.

"I think UCLA is back on the rise and I'm excited to be a part of the program," he said.

Turpin is the Bruins 16th commitment for the class of 2012 and third defensive end.

"He is a very athletic 250 pounder who comes off the ball well," Maxpreps analyst Tom Lemming said. "He shows quick hands, can move his feet, and bends off the edge. Not yet the dominating player he should become but scouts love his athletic ability and potential. Big things are expected of him this season and he shows the frame to carry at least 270 pounds. Plays the game with a reckless abandon and is relentless in pursuit."
