After decommitting from Indiana and delaying his decision several times, Columbus (Ind.) quarterback Gunner Kiel has finally pulled the trigger and committed to LSU.

"I can't wait to play in the SEC," Kiel told 247Sports. "A lot of people call it the NFL of college football and it will be an exciting time. It would mean a lot to be a starting quarterback in such a great conference at a great school. I really love the players and the coaching staff. They were all great to me on my visit and seemed very welcoming."

Ranked as the top signal-caller in the class of 2012 and number two overall recruit by Maxpreps, Kiel holds scholarship offers from just about every program in the country, including Alabama, Oklahoma, Michigan, USC and others. He surprised plenty of folks by committing to Indiana in late July and new head coach Kevin Wilson but opened things back up in October. He quickly scheduled official visits to each of his finalists, Notre Dame, LSU and Vanderbilt.

"To be honest I'm just reevaluating my decision," Kiel told CBSSports.com at the time. "I just want to go out and see other places and see if IU is the right place."

The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder threw for 2,517 yards and 28 touchdowns this season while also rushing for 11 scores. He led Columbus East to an 11-2 record his senior year and was named Indiana's "Mr. Football" by the Indianapolis Star.

Kiel's brother, Dusty, is a sophomore at Indiana and his uncle, Blair, played at Notre Dame.

The strong-armed and aptly named Gunner will enroll early in Baton Rouge after playing in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on January 7th.

The commitment of the top quarterback in the country is another big boost for the Tigers class of 2012, which now sits at 22 commits. LSU took three quarterbacks with last year's class and Kiel figures to battle talented junior college transfer Zach Mettenberger for the starting job upon arriving on campus. Prior to Kiel's pledge, Les Miles' next recruiting class was ranked 9th overall in the MaxPreps team rankings.

I must say that I love all of the jealousy expressed on this board.  You can hate on Kiel or LSU all you want, but it looks like the two will be together for a while.  It also looks like some of you are scared about that possibility.  I love that even more.  Geaux Tigers!!!

Kiel better get used to the idea that he may be sharing time with someone else, because Miles likes to shift his players, including quarterbacks around, whether of necessity (as in this season) or just to mix things up and keep guys fresh, while sporting a different look.  He also needs to get used to the fact that winning programs in the SEC start with defense first.  Certainly LSU's team of this season is proof enough of that.

OU pulled their offer back in the summer.  My guess is, he transfers after his freshman year.

I can't say I blame him. He could have gone to Indiana but instead went to LSU.
Translation: Why would I want to commit to the tune-up team of the Big 10 when I can go to a top notch school of the SEC?

I'm sure this guy is top rated talent and all, but experts can analyze all they want, it all comes down to what he produces on the field. Let's face the facts here, he's going to have some stiff competition when he comes to camp. Had he gone to Indiana, he would more than likely be starting. But then again, if in both case scenarios he did start I think LSU will provide better lineman than Indiana. Further preventing this kid from getting lit up like a Christmas Tree.

We'll see how tough those defenses are in the SEC.  It takes more than good run defense to be an All-American Corner.  Let's see what happens when those Alabama guys stop playing an 8 man line.  Or will Les Miles just move Kiel to QB, because defense wins championships.

Good for LSU not really sure if this was the best decesion for his build though. LSU seems to flourish with the duel threat guys who like to hand the ball off and throw when it's needed.  I personally would see him better suited somewhere like Oklahoma, Arkansas, or Florida. And I'm not sure that USC was recruiting him or any passers due to the needs in other positions. We already have Scroggins who was the top pro QB like this guy two years ago then two guys who were one and three last year.

But...is Gunner a runner?  He seems not to be the "athletic" QB that Les has come to love of late. I can understand NOT IU....but Kiel may regret not going to ND or USC.  But then again, QBs at LSU get to have lots of sneakers!  That's a plus.
