SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Though he spoiled the surprise a little on his Twitter account, Sacramento (Calif.) safety Shaq Thompson took the national stage of the 2012 U.S. Army All-American Bowl to publicly announce that he had committed to long-time leader California.

"I'm going to go the University of California," Thompson said. "(The other recruits and I) always felt real comfortable there and are going to change the game."

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Thompson also excelled on the field at running back but will be roaming the Bears secondary much like his older brother, Syd'Quan Thompson, did a few years ago. The highest ranked safety in the West, the younger Thompson also considered Washington, Notre Dame and USC.

"He is smart, quick, fast, hard working, and an incredible athlete," analyst Tom Lemming said. "He shows the burst and pure speed to cut in front of a receiver and make the tough interception. Quick to diagnose, he can jump routes and has been blessed with exceptional ball skills."

The five-star and number five overall player in the class of 2012 according to MaxPreps, Thompson had 57 tackles on defense and rushed for 1,135 yards and 15 touchdowns.
