Where in the world is Gunner Kiel landing?

Well, I waited before posting something given how fluid the situation is (which, I guess, easily applies to recruiting in general the next few weeks) but a quick update as Monday evening rolls around.

This afternoon reported that a source informed them that recent commit and Maxpreps' #2 overall player Gunner Kiel was not in attendance for an early enrollee meeting at LSU ahead of classes starting Tuesday. This was followed by several reports coming out of Notre Dame saying that Kiel could be headed to South Bend, including and 247Sports' Steve Wiltfong, who is close to the family.

Attempts to reach Kiel were unsuccessful and sources on both sides didn't provide any information on what might be happening.

Obviously this is just another recruiting drama to follow one of the country's top ranked players (think Terrelle Pryor or Jadeveon Clowney in just the past few years). Kiel seemed solidly committed following a so-so performance at the Army All-American Bowl two weeks ago.

"The SEC is just like the NFL," Kiel told "It's going to be hard and I know it's going to hard and I have to make a lot of improvements.

"But it is a perfect time for me to go (to LSU) and compete. With Jordan (Jefferson) and Jarrett (Lee) both seniors and leaving it's a perfect time to go and battle for a spot. Baton Rouge is a beautiful place and the people there are so nice, it's like a big family there. It's awesome."

Kiel also briefly mentioned a good relationship with quarterbacks coach Steve Kragthorpe and how hard LSU recruited him despite his commitment to Indiana. All of it seems... interesting in retrospect but we'll see what happens in the next 24 hours. The signal-caller does have time to make up his mind as to where he wants to enroll early but if he does it is notable that he's already cost the Tigers one recruit in offensive tackle Patrick Miller, who surprisingly enrolled at Auburn after there was no room for him in Baton Rouge.

So basically, something's up but nobody knows exactly what is going on - including several coaches. Got it? Get it. Good. That's how recruiting - especially around top five recruits - seems to go this time of year. If there is an update, check back on the Eye on Recruiting.

Otherwise, Where in the World is Gunner Kiel resumes tomorrow.

UPDATE: The Observer has confirmed that Kiel will head to Notre Dame.

Where in the world is Gunner Kiel landing?

Gunner wasn't happy that his name wasn't mentioned during the National Championship game.  All emphasis was on the other phenom in waiting.  He sees a chance to start immediately at ND and didn't want to be second fiddle at LSU.

The continuance of this story is that Gunner might have read the reports of the heated atmosphere in the LSU locker room prior to the NC game. Unnamed sources report that several Tigers got into it over whether Jordan Jefferson or Jarrett Lee should start. Jefferson, it is reported, did not prepare well for the NC game and was reportedly seen out drinking only nights before the championship game. The players wanted Lee to start and Les Miles backed Jefferson causing a meltdown. Also, it is generally a given that Zack Metterberger will start next year for LSU. Whatever the case, I have read several places that Kiel will enroll at Notre Dame now.

Heck who wants to be a QB at a college that could not even put 100 yards total offense up in the NCG.

Not really surprised.  He changed his mind once already.  Do what you think is right Gunner, and good luck in college.
