It looks like Gunner Kiel will be Irish after all.

The nation's No. 2 recruit and top quarterback committed to LSU shortly after Christmas, but has spurned the Tigers at the 11th hour, enrolling at Notre Dame.

"This recruitment process was a roller-coaster ride at times, but I know I have made the right decision for my family and me," Kiel said in the school's release. "There were three critical elements I was looking for in my future school: the quality of education I would receive, the distance from home and the comfort level I would have with the players and coaches in the football program. Notre Dame was the perfect fit for me because it hit all three areas.

"Coach Kelly was great throughout my recruitment, as many times our conversations had nothing do with football. That really showed me he had my best intentions in mind. He was persistent yet also patient while recruiting me and I look forward to playing for him the next four years. I couldn't be happier to be a member of the Fighting Irish football team. I'm excited about the future of the program."

Kiel, who graduated from Columbus East (Columbus, Ind.) in January, was set to begin classes at LSU when the semester began on Tuesday.

However, rumors began to swirl on Monday that the 6-foot-4, 215-pound signal caller had not traveled to Baton Rouge and may have been wavering on his commitment to LSU.

This marks the second time Kiel has backed off a verbal commitment; he reneged on an earlier pledge to attend Indiana University.

His commitment gives Notre Dame help at a position in which it's sorely needed. It also takes away some of the sting of losing Ron Darby (uncommitted) and Taylor Decker (Ohio State) in recent days.

Jeremy Liggins, a dual-threat quarterback from Mississippi, could now emerge as a top target for LSU, which is also thin at quarterback.

Notre Dame is waiting to receive word on possibly landing Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove, Calif.) star Arik Armstead, who's expected to make his decision today.

According to LSU RapidReporter Glenn Guilbeau, Kiel's mother is the biggest reason why the quarterback is in South Bend instead of Baton Rouge.

drunkenirish, you said "yea ND plays Navy but"  like you had to defend it.  Don't.  The reason ND plays Notre Dame is a great story and doesn't need defending. It goes back to Navy using the university during WWII and basically keeping the university afloat financially. The game is ND's way at paying back the service done by the Navy.

He is an Indiana kid who wants to play close to home.  Maybe his mom's meatloaf is really that good!

Just as long as he understands that he will not be playing for a National Title at Notre Dame.  Notre Dame was a complete and utter mess.  Kelly's coaching "style" (screaming constantly) will not translate to a winning way for the Irish.

Gunner could have come in and been on a contending team next year.

Life is about choices.  He thinks he made the best choice.  Gunner, enjoy those Sunday dinners at home each weekend.

He didn't break any rules by breaking a commitment, but his actions have shown that he's completely in this for himself. Taking that into consideration, I think that he thinks that rules do not apply to him. That's all I meant, not that he broke rules by decommitting, but I think he could get into some off the field trouble with that mindset.

I would have to agree that USC will probably win the next game with Matt Barkley as a senior... although ND won in 2010 and lost in 2011 because of a "14 point play", the fumble on goaline returned by USC for a TD.

If i was a USC fan the only team i would be hating on right now is Ohio State who got a slap on the wrist and their violations were worse then USC's.

Hey OleMiss...  Here's ND's powder puff schedule you are referring to (below). FIVE teams in the top 16 AP Poll. Notice BCS teams in bold PLUS #6 USC and 10-3 Oklahoma (ND plays Oklahoma or Texas the next five years).  Yea ND plays Navy but do you want me to make a list of the schools who are playing DIV-1AA and DIV-2 programs...  MOST D1A football propgrams play DIV-1AA and DIV-2 programs, BUT not Notre Dame.

S01 vs. Navy (Navy was 9-4 in 2010, 10-4 in 2009, 8-4 in 2008, 8-5 in 2007, 9-4 in 2006, etc)
S08 PURDUE
S15 @ Michigan State #11
S22 MICHIGAN #12
O06 vs. University of Miami
O13 STANFORD #7
O20 BYU
O27 @ Oklahoma #16
N03 PITTSBURGH
N10 @ Boston College
N17 WAKE FOREST
N24 @ Southern Cal (#6 in AP)

I agree with you though that your SEC conference will continue to do well against almost anyone, as long as all the boosters continue to give out $500 handshakes as stated by the "Auburn Four" on HBO when they talked about your conference, although Ohio State was mentioned too.

Y'all take Kiel and all the studs you can find.  He'll never beat a SEC team.  As far as I'm concerned, Brian Kelly is a me-first guy who throws his players under the bus when the heat is on.   He'd finish about last in the SEC because Saban, Miles, and their kind would eat him for a snack.  Heh, heh, I said snack...  Is Rex Ryan available to go have a snack?...
