It looks like Gunner Kiel will be Irish after all.

The nation's No. 2 recruit and top quarterback committed to LSU shortly after Christmas, but has spurned the Tigers at the 11th hour, enrolling at Notre Dame.

"This recruitment process was a roller-coaster ride at times, but I know I have made the right decision for my family and me," Kiel said in the school's release. "There were three critical elements I was looking for in my future school: the quality of education I would receive, the distance from home and the comfort level I would have with the players and coaches in the football program. Notre Dame was the perfect fit for me because it hit all three areas.

"Coach Kelly was great throughout my recruitment, as many times our conversations had nothing do with football. That really showed me he had my best intentions in mind. He was persistent yet also patient while recruiting me and I look forward to playing for him the next four years. I couldn't be happier to be a member of the Fighting Irish football team. I'm excited about the future of the program."

Kiel, who graduated from Columbus East (Columbus, Ind.) in January, was set to begin classes at LSU when the semester began on Tuesday.

However, rumors began to swirl on Monday that the 6-foot-4, 215-pound signal caller had not traveled to Baton Rouge and may have been wavering on his commitment to LSU.

This marks the second time Kiel has backed off a verbal commitment; he reneged on an earlier pledge to attend Indiana University.

His commitment gives Notre Dame help at a position in which it's sorely needed. It also takes away some of the sting of losing Ron Darby (uncommitted) and Taylor Decker (Ohio State) in recent days.

Jeremy Liggins, a dual-threat quarterback from Mississippi, could now emerge as a top target for LSU, which is also thin at quarterback.

Notre Dame is waiting to receive word on possibly landing Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove, Calif.) star Arik Armstead, who's expected to make his decision today.

According to LSU RapidReporter Glenn Guilbeau, Kiel's mother is the biggest reason why the quarterback is in South Bend instead of Baton Rouge.

Hey  - Here's the EASY ND schedule you are referring to (below). FIVE teams in the top 16 AP Poll.

Notice BCS teams in bold PLUS #6 USC and 10-3 Oklahoma (ND plays Oklahoma or Texas the next five years).  Yea ND plays Navy but do you want me to make a list of the schools who are playing DIV-1AA and DIV-2 programs...  MOST D1A football propgrams play DIV-1AA and DIV-2 programs, BUT not Notre Dame.

S01 vs. Navy (BTW - Navy was 9-4 in 2010, 10-4 in 2009, 8-4 in 2008, 8-5 in 2007, 9-4 in 2006, etc)
S08 PURDUE
S15 @ Michigan State #11
S22 MICHIGAN #12
O06 vs. Miami (Chi)
O13 STANFORD #7
O20 BYU
O27 @ Oklahoma #16
N03 PITTSBURGH
N10 @ Boston College
N17 WAKE FOREST
N24 @ Southern Cal (#6 in AP)

Notre Dame??  What the hell is this kid thinking?  Oh well, I guess he wants to follow the same path that NFL greats Rick Mirer, Jimmy Clausen, and Brady Quinn have taken.  Win one for the gipper little man.

is football even relevant at ND anymore? This ain't the 1950's.. JaMarcus Russell made more $ as a pro ($40 MIL- thanks Al Davis!!) than this kid Kiel Hockenberry will make in a lifetime. Plus, Indiana Cornbread would have been sitting at #3 on the depth chart behind Zach Mett & Stephen Rivers. At ND, he'll be a starter on both the football field & debate team. Playing "powerhouses" like Navy, Air Force, Purdue, BC, etc.,

It was a verbal commitment, not a written commitment. The player has the right to leave his verbal commitment at any time until he signs the paperwork. I don't see anything wrong with this, it would have been difficult for his parents to see his games, now they are 4 hours from South Bend. Good choice on his part.

don't blame Gunner Kiel changing his mind for the second time to go to a big name school finally like Notre Dame then being stick at little LSU. Kiel would never be a good or great QB in that hell hole called LSU especially after he saw little LSU couldn't score a point in the Championship Game like usually against Alabama. Plus would you want to be known as an incest, Cajun, idiot for the rest of your life if you went to school at LSU, hell no you don't. Boy after that disaster in the Championship Game all recruits are panicking & trying to leave from LSU fast & there Cajun idiot fans too.
Stay in school kids or end up like this stevephoenix.  That hell hole LSU lol would beat any team from Arizona by 50.  Of course Arizona just banned books to keep immigrants/natives from getting any of that book-learning.  Can't have non-whites thinking for themselves in Iranizona lol.

He probably doesn't want to play behind a thug who should've been suspended.  Maybe he doesn't want a police record to have to start a football game.
Huh?  I think if you shorten it to just "play behind" as he would sit the bench at LSU explains the decision.  What is funnier than an Oklahaoma fan talking about arrests lol.

He would have had a much better chance of being a part of a National Championship team at LSU. Those guys are going to be scary good for the next couple of years. I've heard good things about Zach Mettenberger though so Kiel may not have felt as good about playing time at LSU. Ultimately these players have to do what is best for them. Being the young men that they are, they may try to rush it at times.
