It looks like Gunner Kiel will be Irish after all.

The nation's No. 2 recruit and top quarterback committed to LSU shortly after Christmas, but has spurned the Tigers at the 11th hour, enrolling at Notre Dame.

"This recruitment process was a roller-coaster ride at times, but I know I have made the right decision for my family and me," Kiel said in the school's release. "There were three critical elements I was looking for in my future school: the quality of education I would receive, the distance from home and the comfort level I would have with the players and coaches in the football program. Notre Dame was the perfect fit for me because it hit all three areas.

"Coach Kelly was great throughout my recruitment, as many times our conversations had nothing do with football. That really showed me he had my best intentions in mind. He was persistent yet also patient while recruiting me and I look forward to playing for him the next four years. I couldn't be happier to be a member of the Fighting Irish football team. I'm excited about the future of the program."

Kiel, who graduated from Columbus East (Columbus, Ind.) in January, was set to begin classes at LSU when the semester began on Tuesday.

However, rumors began to swirl on Monday that the 6-foot-4, 215-pound signal caller had not traveled to Baton Rouge and may have been wavering on his commitment to LSU.

This marks the second time Kiel has backed off a verbal commitment; he reneged on an earlier pledge to attend Indiana University.

His commitment gives Notre Dame help at a position in which it's sorely needed. It also takes away some of the sting of losing Ron Darby (uncommitted) and Taylor Decker (Ohio State) in recent days.

Jeremy Liggins, a dual-threat quarterback from Mississippi, could now emerge as a top target for LSU, which is also thin at quarterback.

Notre Dame is waiting to receive word on possibly landing Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove, Calif.) star Arik Armstead, who's expected to make his decision today.

According to LSU RapidReporter Glenn Guilbeau, Kiel's mother is the biggest reason why the quarterback is in South Bend instead of Baton Rouge.

It would appear that Kiel has some maturity issues, but he is still a kid, so I will not beat him up over this decision.  He has now changed his mind a few times, and the "critical elements" are pure nonsense, but I never have a problem when a young man stays in his home state for college.

This is all about what is wrong about college sports.

Brien Kelly did not honor Kirls committment to are very vulnerable when making these decisions..and it is natuaral to wonder if the school you choose is correct.

Then after you committ you still have Brien Kelly hounding the kid saying you made the wrong decision and to back out.  The NCAA has got to have college coaches stop contacting players after a committment is is ruining the sport..

Man your kind of tough on us "cajun fans".  Give us a break.  I'm at a loss for the BCS results by LSU also, but that doesn't make us idiots.

Good for you buddy! Hope those a$$holes at LSU are pissed. Ask Jarred Lee how much playing time he got after Richardson came back into the lineup after doing what he did for the program. Who the hell knows what kind of playing time you would have gotten down there. Go somewhere you are going to be appreciated! Good luck with everything!!

The best quarterback to ever come out of LSU will become a household name next year.  Hint: He won a national championship at LSU when he finally got to start, backing up future bust Jamarcus Russell.  He also holds the single game TD record for the Green bay Packers after getting his second career start this year!!!  He's gonna get a nice free agent contract this offseason to start for someone, his name....MATT FLYNN!!!

I don't blame Gunner Kiel changing his mind for the second time to go to a big name school finally like Notre Dame then being stick at little LSU. Kiel would never be a good or great QB in that hell hole called LSU especially after he saw little LSU couldn't score a point in the Championship Game like usually against Alabama. Plus would you want to be known as an incest, Cajun, idiot for the rest of your life if you went to school at LSU, hell no you don't. Boy after that disaster in the Championship Game all recruits are panicking & trying to leave from LSU fast & there Cajun idiot fans too.

probably a good move by this kid , who knows until he gets under center as the ND starter. If he does well and has ND in the BCS or NCG then it was a good move...if that doesnt take place then the naysayers will say that he should have stuck to the LSU commitment. I believe we all agree that decomitting from Indiana was the smartest thing he ever did .

Who would want to go play in that offense anyway.  He would get killed playing QB for LSU.  This way has a better chance at actually being a QB and going to the next level one day.  He can change his mind just like LSU can change there mind on unloading players when they are not living up to the bill, which happens every year at a major college.

And what ND breeds NFL QBs????

Talk about livin' in the past. Sounds more like this guy wanted to be close to mommy.
