It looks like Gunner Kiel will be Irish after all.

The nation's No. 2 recruit and top quarterback committed to LSU shortly after Christmas, but has spurned the Tigers at the 11th hour, enrolling at Notre Dame.

"This recruitment process was a roller-coaster ride at times, but I know I have made the right decision for my family and me," Kiel said in the school's release. "There were three critical elements I was looking for in my future school: the quality of education I would receive, the distance from home and the comfort level I would have with the players and coaches in the football program. Notre Dame was the perfect fit for me because it hit all three areas.

"Coach Kelly was great throughout my recruitment, as many times our conversations had nothing do with football. That really showed me he had my best intentions in mind. He was persistent yet also patient while recruiting me and I look forward to playing for him the next four years. I couldn't be happier to be a member of the Fighting Irish football team. I'm excited about the future of the program."

Kiel, who graduated from Columbus East (Columbus, Ind.) in January, was set to begin classes at LSU when the semester began on Tuesday.

However, rumors began to swirl on Monday that the 6-foot-4, 215-pound signal caller had not traveled to Baton Rouge and may have been wavering on his commitment to LSU.

This marks the second time Kiel has backed off a verbal commitment; he reneged on an earlier pledge to attend Indiana University.

His commitment gives Notre Dame help at a position in which it's sorely needed. It also takes away some of the sting of losing Ron Darby (uncommitted) and Taylor Decker (Ohio State) in recent days.

Jeremy Liggins, a dual-threat quarterback from Mississippi, could now emerge as a top target for LSU, which is also thin at quarterback.

Notre Dame is waiting to receive word on possibly landing Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove, Calif.) star Arik Armstead, who's expected to make his decision today.

According to LSU RapidReporter Glenn Guilbeau, Kiel's mother is the biggest reason why the quarterback is in South Bend instead of Baton Rouge.

It has nothing to do with checks.  Who wants to be QB at LSU???  Those are future running backs and receivers playing the QB position.  Just look at their best prospect ever to come out of LSU at  that position..... Damn I cant even remember his name, went to the Raiders and sucked so bad that after 3 seasons he's doing specials on HBO on Where Are They Now???  LSU doesn't breed NFL QB's, they breed NFL defensive players.  So if I was fortunate to have a son that was gifted enough to play anywhere he wanted to, it surely wouldn't be LSU!

These teams keep beating the rest of the country with very average QBs. Just how important is are these pretty all american QBs that everyone keeps raving about? Those same schools are accused of "living in the past" with the style they play. Keep putting those glamour boys high on your priority list, and you'll continue to be frustrated. Whose living in the past now?

Can't blame him for wanting to go to a more pro noticed school, but by doing so he made a statement saying he doesn't care about winning a heisman or a national title, because he won't do either at the mess that is now Notre Dame Football.

any decent qb prospect knows that if he wants to have a decent shot at becoming a pro qb do not play at LSU....with that garbage three yards and a cloud of dust type atrocious offense that they run a young prospect will regress in an offense as primitive as that.although this kid went to nd and they are usc's rivals he did the right thing.

I guess LSU is lucky they didn't get stuck with him.  He couldn't possibly have been better than the 2 so-called QBs they had this year.

He can read and color between the lines. He'll do great at ND. That reading will come in handy when he picks up the sports page and finds out how below average his football team is.

Is this the part where Beano Cook declares him the savior and guarantees him 3 heisman's?

I heard he learned to read, so the classes offered at LSU became worthless.

Can't blame him...much easier to look like a superstar at ND. He will be the best player on the team at ND. Probably would not have been at LSU. He's a kid...of course he's going to choose the path of least resistance.
