It looks like Gunner Kiel will be Irish after all.

The nation's No. 2 recruit and top quarterback committed to LSU shortly after Christmas, but has spurned the Tigers at the 11th hour, enrolling at Notre Dame.

"This recruitment process was a roller-coaster ride at times, but I know I have made the right decision for my family and me," Kiel said in the school's release. "There were three critical elements I was looking for in my future school: the quality of education I would receive, the distance from home and the comfort level I would have with the players and coaches in the football program. Notre Dame was the perfect fit for me because it hit all three areas.

"Coach Kelly was great throughout my recruitment, as many times our conversations had nothing do with football. That really showed me he had my best intentions in mind. He was persistent yet also patient while recruiting me and I look forward to playing for him the next four years. I couldn't be happier to be a member of the Fighting Irish football team. I'm excited about the future of the program."

Kiel, who graduated from Columbus East (Columbus, Ind.) in January, was set to begin classes at LSU when the semester began on Tuesday.

However, rumors began to swirl on Monday that the 6-foot-4, 215-pound signal caller had not traveled to Baton Rouge and may have been wavering on his commitment to LSU.

This marks the second time Kiel has backed off a verbal commitment; he reneged on an earlier pledge to attend Indiana University.

His commitment gives Notre Dame help at a position in which it's sorely needed. It also takes away some of the sting of losing Ron Darby (uncommitted) and Taylor Decker (Ohio State) in recent days.

Jeremy Liggins, a dual-threat quarterback from Mississippi, could now emerge as a top target for LSU, which is also thin at quarterback.

Notre Dame is waiting to receive word on possibly landing Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove, Calif.) star Arik Armstead, who's expected to make his decision today.

According to LSU RapidReporter Glenn Guilbeau, Kiel's mother is the biggest reason why the quarterback is in South Bend instead of Baton Rouge.

Clausen and Quinn were both very good college QBs, both led offenses that were better than any offense I've seen in Louisiana other than the Saints. They didn't play defense.

Picking apart Big 10 and Big East defenses or getting hammered by SEC defenses every week?  After that crappy All-Star game performance, he realized that he'd go to the SEC and be a scrub.  He can go to Notre Dame, beat up on Pitt and Navy, go 8-4, and get punched in the face in a bar when Notre Dame fans realize it's not 1941 anymore.

Obviously this kid needs some guidance off the field.  Notre Dame is his third school already and he hasnt even enrolled in classes yet.  I will be more than surprised if he finishes his career there in South Bend.

I don't get why people get mad and start calling these young kids names because they reneged on their commitment?  Who cares......verbals commitments don't mean a damn thing until the kid signs on the dotted line.

It's not the kids fault, verbal commitments are a joke, Notre Dame also lost a few that committed to the Irish. It's not a commitment until they sign.

I don't believe Mr. Kiel's decision to ditch LSU for Notre Dame had anything to do with "quality of education", and everything to do with starting sooner. At LSU, he would be sitting on the bench for at least two years playing backup to Zach Mettenbereger. He'll probably start for the Irish next season. That's pretty much it on a nutshell.

On another note, I have offhandedly slammed Coach Nick Saban on this thread. Let me clarify my position. First, I did believe that he would leave LSU prematurely after he was hired. Second, I am very thankful to him for making LSU football relevant again and delivering a National Championship to the Tigers. I am not happy about the way he left. As the old saying goes,"A leopard doesn't change his spots." Until I hear Coach Saban talk openly about the wrongs and harm he did to Michigan St., LSU, and the Miami Dolphins, by his premature departures while screaming "I have no interest at (fill in the blank)", I firmly believe he will do the same thing at the University of Alabama, it's just a matter of time.
