Notre Dame fans became a bit worried when five-star wide receiver Deontay Greenberry visited Houston earlier this week after giving a verbal commitment to the Irish, and it appears those worries weren't without reason.

CBSSports.com's Bryan Fischer confirmed on Wednesday that Greenberry had signed his letter of intent to play at Houston.

This comes as a big surprise as Greenberry had maintained all along that he wanted to go to school with his cousin, cornerback Tee Shepard. Shepard is a Notre Dame signing who signed his letter of intent to the school on Wednesday.

Greenberry is the ranked third amongst all wide receivers by MaxPreps, behind only Dorial Green-Beckham and Cayleb Jones. While losing Greenberry to Houston doesn't kill what's a pretty strong 2012 class for Notre Dame, it's also not the kind of news Brian Kelly and his staff were expecting to hear today.

Keep up with all the latest from National Signing Day at CBSSports.com's National Signing Day Central.

sounds like Houston stole a page out of SMU's playbook in the 1980's....

While I agree that UH is no Notre Dame, it did receive Tier One status about a year ago.  It's not a worthless degree.

Hopefully Deontay doesn't suffer a career-ending injury during his time at Houston. Being forced to live in a non-NFL  world is alot easier carrying a degree from The University of Notre Dame than one from Houston. Who is advising these wide-eyed kids?

If I were a receiver I'd choose Houston.....nothing looks better on paper than catches and touchdowns....and he'll probably over the course of his career have double what he'd have witht he irish

"Conferences are for those who can't hack it on their own" You mean schools like Alabama, LSU, Oregon, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, VT, FSU?

What is happening in South Bend you ask?  Still got a top 20 ranked recruiting class.  I don't see that as a bad thing and with the additions of Gunner Kiel, Tee Shepard, Sheldon Day, Jarron Jones and some other quality kids I'm o.k.  Amir Carlisle coming over from USC will also help next year.  Sure, it would of been nice to secure some of the kids that chose elsewhere, but we have a solid class.
