Notre Dame fans became a bit worried when five-star wide receiver Deontay Greenberry visited Houston earlier this week after giving a verbal commitment to the Irish, and it appears those worries weren't without reason.

CBSSports.com's Bryan Fischer confirmed on Wednesday that Greenberry had signed his letter of intent to play at Houston.

This comes as a big surprise as Greenberry had maintained all along that he wanted to go to school with his cousin, cornerback Tee Shepard. Shepard is a Notre Dame signing who signed his letter of intent to the school on Wednesday.

Greenberry is the ranked third amongst all wide receivers by MaxPreps, behind only Dorial Green-Beckham and Cayleb Jones. While losing Greenberry to Houston doesn't kill what's a pretty strong 2012 class for Notre Dame, it's also not the kind of news Brian Kelly and his staff were expecting to hear today.

Keep up with all the latest from National Signing Day at CBSSports.com's National Signing Day Central.

Notre Dame loses Greenberry to Houston

Reality is that ND, in eyes of many kids born after after 1980, is no longer relevant. This isn't hating on ND, but just a reality check that shows up most with recruiting. Reality bites.

And I'm voting no-confidence in Notre Dame-hating morons.  Conferences are for those who can't hack it on their own, making decisions for themselves.  Those more comfortable and happy as sheep, just a part of the flock.

Consider a few possibilities from, you know, REALITY.

Number one:  ALL schools lose commits, it's not the end of the world.

Number two:  Last year it was very late in the process when Notre Dame acquired Stephon Tuitt, Aaron Lynch and Ishaq Williams (5-star prospects all) who were at the time committed to other schools.  Sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you.

Number three:  This is a kid and he could have any number of reasons or rationalizations to switch committments.  It could be the weather or it could be the fact that Notre Dame is much more academically demanding.

Simple.  Recruits are showing a vote of no confidence in the future of independents.

Notre Dame loses Greenberry to Houston

This is not a strong class, and Brian Kelly has lost THREE major recruits as of right now- The darby kid, the LB from south bend, and this kid. It begs the question, what is happening in South Bend?
