Report: Gary Bettman gets five-year extension

This could be why Gary Bettman doesn't seem bothered by the backlash the league has received for its decision not to suspend Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara, the latest tumult in his 18-year tenure as NHL Commissioner.

Bettman had his contract quietly extended five more years back in November, The Globe and Mail reported Friday. The newspaper reports that the nine-member executive committee unanimously approved the extension.

Bettman's current contract, which pays him $7.2 million annually, was originally set to expire this summer. Apparenlty, one of his biggest backers may very well be the owner of the team at the center of this week's controversy.
What will surely fire up the conspiracy theorists, who have been venting loudly on all forms of media following Zdeno Chara’s hit on Max Pacioretty of the Montreal Canadiens, is the identity of the driving force behind Bettman’s new contract. It is Jeremy Jacobs, the NHL’s chairman of the board of governors who just happens to own the Boston Bruins, the team that employs Chara. However, as chairman, one of Jacobs’s duties is to keep the commissioner and the other key executives of the NHL under contract.

Bettman confirmed via e-mail he received an extension. “Old news. I believe my contract has been extended four times, each time with the approval of the board of governors,” he said.

Bettman, who was part of a panel convened to promote hockey on Capitol Hill on Thursday, didn't sweat the fact that Air Canada and seemingly all of Quebec was angered the league didn't give Chara at least a token suspension. Here's a look at that video

Bettman has never been a fan-favorite. He gets blamed for the lockout that wiped out the 2004-05 season, his efforts to keep the Phoenix Coyotes from moving to Canada, his expansion to non-traditional markets, the fact that the NHL is no longer on ESPN and even the glowing puck. Since he's the guy at the top, he also gets his share of the blame for what often seems to be uneven discipline -- even if the former NBA exec leaves those issues to his hockey operations staff.

Lost is the fact that Bettman is popular among the only contingent that counts: the league's 30  owners. (OK. The league runs the Coyotes, so that one is a given.). He's gotten them a salary cap and the league, overall, is strong financially.

Report: Gary Bettman gets five-year extension

i dislike the wings and the pens. the one thing i can say though that is very true is that no one ever beats the wings.  Ita always we played crappy, or the refs screwed us, etc.  When teh wings won in 08 they were the better team, when the pens won in 09 they were the better team, and last year the hawks were the best team.  Living in chicago i get it from wings friends here, when i lived in michigan it was pretty hard to talk to any wings fans at all because of their over the top attitude when it comes to that team. Now i dont like the pens because of Crosby.  Hes a great player know doubt, but he walks the line of being dirty every now and then.  So does his buddy Ovi, or should i say Bettmans buddy.  With so much talent littered across this league, a note to bettman.  Not everyone who watches hockey wants to just hear about Crosby and Ovi. If you want to grow the league like you say, profile some of the other guys who are under 22 who are fantastic.

Report: Gary Bettman gets five-year extension

I didn't think this article was so much about the Pens beating the Red Wings a couple of years ago (although it is kind of fun to still see the Red Wings fans crying about that- kind of makes you think they know this year isn't going to wind up so great either). This was about Gary Bettman getting an undeserved extension. the big picture says he hasn't been good, although there are good things he has done.
- Putting hockey in non-traditional markets? good- the Carolina franchise is solid, Tampa is solid, San jose is solid, Anaheim is solid

-Putting hockey in non-traditional markets like Glendale, Miami, Nashville, and Atlanta? BAD BAD BAD BAD.. when I go to Phoenix or Miami it is not for the hockey... hotties in bikinis yes, hockey no! Nashville- the music is great, the hockey fans are not. Atlanta- is a trainwreck- period.... a waste is city space... The dude that said he got tickets to florida for 20 bucks and were given tickets in glendale- I am calling you out, LIAR... you go to one, or the other, but they are very different places...

- The salary cap and cost control? good

- the lack of leadership? BAD.. don't mistake confrontational for leadership. He likes a good fight, he is a lousy leader.

Hockey is growing but Bettman has missed his opportunity to take full advantage. Baseball was and is floundering, basketball was floundering to the point hockey was drawing better ratings on versus- MAKE YOUR MOVE. Change the parts of the game that are necessary to keeping it entertaining, while maintaining the guts and integrity of the game. Player safety and abolish fights would not change the integrity of the game. It would grow the game. Hockey has more young stars than any league. keep them on the ice and find others. Would you rather have enforcers or a 4th scoring line with young guys developing their skills? Candians need American viewership. Sorry boys but you do. It is not about the dollar. It is about the numbers. Canada has 1/6th the population USA does. America needs Canada to pioneer the game. There is no better training ground than major junior hockey, and more Canadians play in the NHL than all other countries combined.

Detriot, I'm sorry your life sucks so much you have to complain about a final from two years ago.  And if you're team was really all that great, they would have won it before it got to 7 games.  So shut it and move on.

I'm not going to whine about the 2009 Stanley Cup finals. The Pens deserved to win. They had younger legs and made the winged wheels look like pile ons. I simply don't like Bettman. If Phoenix can't financially handle a team, they should of gone somewhere that wants a hockey team and can support it. I am personally for the league to get smaller. It's a great sport. Let's face it, you have to look in the mirror when reruns of "Friends" gets better ratings.

This was about Bettman but if you want a battle smart a$$ ...........You really need to get your facts straight before you pop off at the mouth... I didnt make the rules the league did and he changed it so your cry baby cindy could have a better chance to win the cup. Your team shouldn't have even been in the finals the only reason you made it was because Washington couldn't finish you off..The better team didnt win because the Wings had a better record. Washington was even better than your team... Oh by the way how many cups has Pittsburgh as many as the Wings

Talk about insult to injury. The backlash gets worse and worse by the day, and now they decide to be like, "oh yeah, and he'll be here another 5 years. HA!" Wow.
