The Los Angeles Kings are now without their two top scorers for several weeks.

Center Anze Kopitar broke his ankle during the Kings' 4-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday. Kopitar got his skate caught on the ice as he battled along the boards with Avs defenseman Ryan O'Byrne. (A replay of the injury is below.)  As he lost his balance, Kopitar's lower leg twisted awkwardly and he was unable to get up on his own.

King coach Terry Murray told reporters that Kopitar would be out at least six weeks.

"He's our best player. We’ve got to find a way either way," Kings captain Dustin Brown told Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times. "Injuries happen during the year. You don’t want to have your best player go down, but if that’s the case, we’ve got to shoulder the responsibility collectively and find a way because no other team is going to feel sorry for us.

"It’s an opportunity for someone else to step up. It’s going to be tough to match Kopi’s play both defensively and offensively, and we’ve got to find a way. The staple of our game is defense, and he’s a big part of that when he’s on the ice. Ultimately it’s a five-man, six-man game for us."

Kopitar was assisted off the ice and went straight to the dressing room after the injury. He's scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday. He shares the team lead in goals with Brown (25) and leads in assists (48).

Justin Williams, second on the team in scoring, separated his shoulder in a game against the Calgary Flames on Sunday, an injury that could mean the end of his season

Huge Sharks fan here...hate to see this happen to anyone.  I really hope the Kings respond with some good team hockey and wish them the best of luck against everyone but the Sharks.

What horrible timing.  Best of luck to the Kings, but this is a huge loss.

This seriously sucks.  Kopitar is a team leader as well as a scorer.  He has been effective at both ends of the ice.  This worries me as a lifelong Kings fan.  Everyone on the team needs to step it up now to make up for his absense.  This is as huge a loss as any team could have and at the worst time of the year.

I am wondering on who they will bring up in place for Kopitar.  Also we will see how the Kings fair the rest of the season without there two leading point leaders.  With this all taking place within the last couple of weeks with the injuries we will see if and how far they will make it in the playoffs and see what seed that they could get or not get.

Indeed devastating.  I was there.  It was nice to see how the Kings responded in the 3rd period.  Granted it was against the Avalanche, but you can never take any team lightly.  We'll see who the Kings recall from Manchester.  Handzus was the one who moved up to Kopi's spot.  Tuesday we'll see how the lines take shape.  Maybe Trevor Lewis will step up his offensive game.  He did in the 3rd period along with Ryan Smyth.  Go Kings Go.  Time to buckle down and see what can be made of the remainder of the season.  Lets hope the team still makes the playoffs and see what they can do from there.    Jeff  Undecided
