Sidney Crosby cleared to skate with team

Sidney Crosby was cleared by doctors to participate in game-day skates and will join the Pittsburgh Penguins on their current trip.

Crosby will be on the ice with his teammates Thursday for the first time since a concussion forced him out of the lineup on Jan. 5. The Pens' two-game trip takes them to Tampa Bay (Thursday) and Florida (Saturday). Game-day skates are typically non-contact.

"I have no expectations of him coming back and playing in the regular season. That’s not going to happen," Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ray Shero told reporters Wednesday.  "In terms of playing in the playoffs for us, that’s something that’s still two or three weeks away (from exploring)."

In fact, Pat Brisson, Crosby's agent, tells CBSSports.com that there has been no talk about a return date. Crosby has been followed closely by team physician Charles Burke and concussion expert Michael Collins, who would have to first OK Crosby's return to full-contact practices.

“Everybody involved recognizes that this takes time," Brisson said. "We haven’t even come to a point where it’s been discussed when he can return to contact hockey. There have not been any discussions among the medical staff, Dr. Collins, myself, Ray Shero and Sidney about when he’s coming back to play. Not at all.”

Still, Brisson said Wednesday's news is surely welcome.

“This is a nice step and we’re going in the direction toward his recovery," he said. "Still, we’re not jumping to any conclusions here. He’ll be able to participate in some sessions with his teammates, but not all of them.”

Crosby has done individual, on-ice workouts since March 14, upping the duration of each session over time. He did not skate today, although this was a scheduled day off.

Shero said he doesn't expect Crosby to endanger himself by coming back too soon.

"He knows his injury at this point," Shero said. "My expectation at this point is that he’s not going to push himself too much, but he’ll push himself enough where he feels good and if he doesn’t he’ll pull back a little bit."

Sidney Crosby cleared to skate with team

I saw a kid in college with head gear on.  He had 3 concussions during the season and was playing.  He is not getting paid millions of dollars.  Obviously Crosby didn't get the vagisil I sent him.  Man up and get back on the ice.  BTW...I am a Penguins fan.  Come on brother!!  I have had a concusion playing football and came back in a week.  No wonder people think he is a premadonna

You are seriously comparing Sidney Crosby and the hundreds of millions of dollars the Pens organization has invested in him to some hack in college hockey and your yinzer self playing flag football in the Saturday beer league for the West View westies? This Crosby decision doesn't have consequences similar to your situation of not being able to drive your Iroc around the Southside listening to Cinderella on the weekends. It's a little more serious.

And it's 'prima donna' not 'before the slut who sung Like a Virgin'

Sidney Crosby cleared to 'bate with team

Thanks for quoting my post, I am flattered.  I ask that you please refrain from putting words in my mouth that I have not said, or making assumptions based on your over-valuing of your teams ability and playoff chances this year. As a Flyer fan (and Penguin hater), I can assure you that I'd rather play the Pens than Tampa in the playoffs, this year in particular, Sid or no.  It's not because I hope they will lose, in fact I hope they meet Tampa and beat them.  I believe the Flyers to be the superior team now, and believe that they can beat the Penguins easily.  Last nights game is still available "on demand" if you have comcast. because apparently you didnt see it.  Don't give me the BS that "if only Sid were here" that sounds like "wait till my boyfriend gets here- you'll see", Flyers have been without key pieces for stretches this year, and are still leading the conference, and will be till the end. I want to see the Flyers and the Pens meet in the playoffs, send the Pens home, and see Sid's face in the pressbox afterward.  I'm pretty confident that that's about how it would go down, so hopefully they get past Tampa.

Too bad for the Pens that there is no shootoout in the playoffs.

Funny that this sentiment is being expressed over and over again by Flyers fans in the past week and yet how did Philly get into the playoffs last year? If memory serves me correct it was by winning a shootout in their 82nd game of the season - they ended up in the Finals.

Just because the Pens won some shootouts last week doesn't mean they would have lost in an overtime. The point is they are playing tight close checking hockey that is resulting in close games - you know exactly how the playoffs play out...

And regarding the Bolts - I'll take Fluery over a 50 year old backup in a 7 game series versus any team, especially if Crosby comes back to get the PP going.

Tampa has some legit scorers, but their Defense is bottom of the barrell. The Pens have a Superior Goalie, Vastly Superior D-men, and a Vastly Superior PK. We get Crosby back and all of the sudden Kovalev, Neal, and Kunitz become a lot more of a scoring threat especially on the PP.

Why not Lemieux did it twenty years ago, and even though there is no return date I am banking he will be back because why would he even skate if he wasnt planning to come back?

Not only why would he skate, why would he travel with the team (which he is this coming trip)? He's aiming to come back for the playoffs for sure. If he doesn't play it will be because something bad happened, but the way it's going now, he'll be back this year.

The Pens will be done in round 1, especially if they draw Tampa.

Especially if they draw Tampa? Or you know they are going to draw Tampa and thus you being a Flyer fan/Penguin hater you hope they will lose? It's alright. I would rather play Tampa than the Pens if I was a Flyer fan too.

@VUT315

Why do you dislike Sid so much?  What did he ever do to you or "your" team that you dislike him so much?

My feeling is if he was on your team you would love him for the player he is.  He might not be the greatest ever that is open for debate, but right now if i Had to start a franchise he would be my first pick.

Stop being a hater and appreciate Sid the player.  Because wether you like it or not he is the best the game has to offer right now and that is not up for debate.

Dont sound so disturbed at the notion of Toews being compared to Crosby. It was Toews who dominated at last year's Winter Olympics..It was Toews whose team won the Stanley Cup. You wont find a better 2 way player in the league...Or a better leader. Toews outshined Crosby in Canada...and is now on fire while leading his team back into playoff form. Crosby is sick..but dont disrespect Toews or the 'Hawks, the Stanley Cup Champs.

Good point about "how do we know this was his first",  I personally think he is a whiny punk but cannot deny his talent.  Yes he was on course for a phenominal year but hell injuries have crushed many great starts to seasons. It's wise to sit him until the "real" season starts.  Frankly I'm suprised the Pens are doing this well w/o Cindy and Malky.
