Sidney Crosby was cleared by doctors to participate in game-day skates and will join the Pittsburgh Penguins on their current trip.

Crosby will be on the ice with his teammates Thursday for the first time since a concussion forced him out of the lineup on Jan. 5. The Pens' two-game trip takes them to Tampa Bay (Thursday) and Florida (Saturday). Game-day skates are typically non-contact.

"I have no expectations of him coming back and playing in the regular season. That’s not going to happen," Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ray Shero told reporters Wednesday.  "In terms of playing in the playoffs for us, that’s something that’s still two or three weeks away (from exploring)."

In fact, Pat Brisson, Crosby's agent, tells CBSSports.com that there has been no talk about a return date. Crosby has been followed closely by team physician Charles Burke and concussion expert Michael Collins, who would have to first OK Crosby's return to full-contact practices.

“Everybody involved recognizes that this takes time," Brisson said. "We haven’t even come to a point where it’s been discussed when he can return to contact hockey. There have not been any discussions among the medical staff, Dr. Collins, myself, Ray Shero and Sidney about when he’s coming back to play. Not at all.”

Still, Brisson said Wednesday's news is surely welcome.

“This is a nice step and we’re going in the direction toward his recovery," he said. "Still, we’re not jumping to any conclusions here. He’ll be able to participate in some sessions with his teammates, but not all of them.”

Crosby has done individual, on-ice workouts since March 14, upping the duration of each session over time. He did not skate today, although this was a scheduled day off.

Shero said he doesn't expect Crosby to endanger himself by coming back too soon.

"He knows his injury at this point," Shero said. "My expectation at this point is that he’s not going to push himself too much, but he’ll push himself enough where he feels good and if he doesn’t he’ll pull back a little bit."

Sidney Crosby cleared to skate with team

the "Best Player" debate is still open

You mean WAS open, right? I think Crosby pretty much closed the door on that question this year before he went out. He was miles ahead of everybody in goals and points. It took Stamkos 13 games just to tie him in goals after he went out. Longer for everybody else in points scored. And you are comparing Toews to Crosby? Your kidding, right?  I guess Toews is up there with Ovechkin and Stamkos also?  Friday is April Fool's Day, not today. Still a couple days to go yet, hahaWink

The Blackhawks aren't one of the great teams in the West either. Only if they go over the salary cap, they could be great. But then, so could any other team. Enjoy your Hossa contract!Undecided

 - the "Best Player" debate is still open, but Sid is obviously on a short list. Don't sleep on Toews and the total package that he brings to the ice. Anyway, Sid is not going to step on the ice and step right back into his old game. He'll need time to get back to game speed after being on the shelf for three months (at least). The Pens have done a fantastic job playing through some tough injuries, but the return of those injured players does not guarantee a thing. The East, as a whole, stinks. But the teams at the top are legit. With or without Sid, Philly, Boston and Washington are more than capable of sending the Pens home.

I think that they will look a lot like what they do now.  Too bad for the Pens that there is no shootoout in the playoffs.  The Pens will be done in round 1, especially if they draw Tampa.  If Sid does come back, and I'm on the other team, I am trying to fully seperate his head from his body, as this is my job.  For the sake of his career, he should sit.

How do you know if this is his first concussion? Players are notorious before very recently for shrugging off headaches and concussion symptoms as part of the game, This kid has played a lot of hockey and probably not always with a helmet. I really don't like him, but I wouldn't wish this on anyone. Though a win over Pit wouldn't be as sweet with him not out there, and it would be a great feel good playoff story if he came back in the playoffs. If he is smart he will not rush this, and just get ready for next season and the rest of his career and life. Washington had a player a few years ago that didn't come back for over a year and then they found he needed corrective lenses to correct dizziness, and of course Mike Green has been out for awhile after two hits in a short time like Crosby took. He was absolutely destroying the league this year and it would be a real crime if that is the highlight couple months of his career because he rushes back and gets permanantly injured.

I'll say this, all you haters can keep talking. If Sid comes back, watch out for the Penguins in the playoffs. He's the best player in the game and they're winning without him. What do you think they'll look like when he gets back on the ice?

Has anybody heard of this much time missed because of a first concussion? Jeez heaven forbid he gets a second he might miss 2 seasons lol....it is unfortunate tho, as much as i dont like him i would have liked to see how many points he woulda finished with bc he was DESTROYING the league.

David Perron, LW for the St. Louis Blues was knocked out of a game on November 4th of 2010 by an elbow to the head. Hasn't played since.

Well you do have to remember, it may be his first concussion, but he got blasted two games in a row.  Just one of the hits and he probably wouldn't have missed any games.  But successive hits like that can have a hell of an effect.  Just ask Austin Collie.

I don't think he will play again this year, it's doesn't make sense to just to jump into play-off hockey after sitting out all this time.

Why because he would only be 85%?  Crosby at 85% is better than 90-98% of the league.  If he can play he will play, for crying out loud the Devils are talking about Parise playing the last couple games of their season and they mean nothing.
