New York Ranges forward Ryan Callahan is out  indefinitely with a broken right ankle, an injury sustained when he got in front of a shot by  Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara in the third period of Monday's game.

"It's long-term," Rangers coach John Tortorella told reporters on Tuesday.

Callahan is the Rangers' second-leading scorer this season with 23 goals and 25 assists. He missed 19 games this season with a broken hand after blocking a shot against the Pittsburgh Penguins

The Rangers have yet to clinch a playoff spot, but their 5-3 victory over Boston on Monday did make them a little more secure. They are in seventh place entering play Tuesday, four points ahead of ninth-place Carolina.

Matt Gilroy will move from defense up to win to fill in for Callahan in the interim, according to The New York Daily News. The team also announced that it was sending defenseman Kris Newbury back to the AHL.

Meanwhile, winger Chris Drury continues his rehab from February knee surgery, although there's no clear indication when he might be able ot return to the lineup.

rangers had a ton of injuries this year, callahan in the end will miss 22 games due blocking shots.   people call this guy a "gamer" and "heart and soul" player, both true, but hes got great hands, can skate and is turning into a star.  by far the best forward on the team, it will be very hard to win without him, but if there is one sport where the whole is much more important then any one part, hockey is it.  the rangers' system is built to withstand an injury.  when they lost callahan for 19 games i believe they had a winning record, guys like dubinksy, boyle, and mostly gaborik must step up, but truth be told the rangers spent all year playing hurt, losing key guys to injuries, like most hockey teams do, ie penguins,  i thought the big ones were behind them.  as a fan of the team hopefully lundquist gets hot, gaborik starts playing like a superstar, and now that they are moving gilroy up front after playing d all year, maybe he will show to be a solid forward.  nhl playoffs, if they make it,  anything can happen.

Tough loss, hard to play a #1 seed without this guy.  Don't want to comment to much on how I like Callahan cause I don't want to sound like PIERRE MCQUIRE (TOOL BOX)  Man i hate him...then put Emerick as the play by play and you don't know who is on the ice...any game on NBC they mentioned the PENS 16 times.  Especially Pierre...and his moronic questions and commnets...terrible.
Emerick is calling out names of who has the puck and the player is no longer on the team....sorry back to the issue.
Callahan is a tough loss for the NYR, don't see them going far now being a low seed and there is no one to replace him.

This is a shame.  He is a player that was born for playoff hockey.  The Playoffs will be less exciting without him.  This is from a Pens fan that only has a modest dislike for the Rangers (I mean we can't hate everybody and the Flyers, Caps, Cry-Baby Hypocrite Bruins and Long Island Roller Derby Queens (aka Gillies, Konopka (Niagara Falls Strip Joint Doorman), Haley, Matt "The Incompetent Mugger" Martin and Broken Face Ricky) trump the Blueshirts hands down)

The day that racist troglodyte Don Cherry goes away and quits (god only knows why), having an effect on the game of hockey, can`t come soon enough.I`m not a Rangers fan,nor do i have anything against them.I`m a hockey fan.I like watching a good game between two good teams. And Callahan is a good player.Shame there`s an idiot like Cherry who goes on national tv,in a place where hockey players really care what the fans think, and bad mouths and belittles any players that won`t risk breaking their bones to block shots. He`s sure going to be a big help to his team NOW Frown Happy Don ? Idiot.

That's too bad. I hate to see any player out for the playoffs. But don't look for any sympathy from Penguins fans. When Crosby and Malkin have been out for over half the season. That injury doesn't even come close to what the Pens have to deal with this year.

Gotta love how much my comments about the Rangers dive and sprawl style has riled everyone up. Funny, the Versus guys were also just questioning the long-term strategy/effects of the Rangers defensive style. And they ARE hockey "experts." I get it that most of you are just sad your little up-and-coming golden boy is out, but seriously... comeback with something better than "go watch more NBA (NBA is the only league I don't have a favorite team in or watch), and that I'm an Isles fan (let's go PENS!). And, yes, when your team is playing against the Rangers, that diving every single shot B.S. is ANNOYING!!! All teams do it, only NYR do it EVERY SINGLE PLAY.

I think the number of comments this story has generated here is a testament to the amount of respect that Cally receives (and deservedly so) throughout the world of hockey.  This is devastating news for Rangers fans.  I don't think any team at the top of the conference relished the thought of having to face the Blueshirts in the 1st round with a healthy Callahan leading the charge.  Being a Rangers fan can feel like a root canal without novocaine sometimes.

Very Funny with the NYPD inestigation. In Montreal it would definitely be looked into!
Definitely a shame, this guy has become our heart and it wasn't going to be easy with him nevermind without him!
LETS GO RANGERS!!!
