New York Ranges forward Ryan Callahan is out  indefinitely with a broken right ankle, an injury sustained when he got in front of a shot by  Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara in the third period of Monday's game.

"It's long-term," Rangers coach John Tortorella told reporters on Tuesday.

Callahan is the Rangers' second-leading scorer this season with 23 goals and 25 assists. He missed 19 games this season with a broken hand after blocking a shot against the Pittsburgh Penguins

The Rangers have yet to clinch a playoff spot, but their 5-3 victory over Boston on Monday did make them a little more secure. They are in seventh place entering play Tuesday, four points ahead of ninth-place Carolina.

Matt Gilroy will move from defense up to win to fill in for Callahan in the interim, according to The New York Daily News. The team also announced that it was sending defenseman Kris Newbury back to the AHL.

Meanwhile, winger Chris Drury continues his rehab from February knee surgery, although there's no clear indication when he might be able ot return to the lineup.

Ryan Callahan has broken ankle, out indefinitely

This hurts... bad.  The Rangers now stand little chance of going anywhere in the playoffs.  Ryan Callahan is a perennial Selke Trophy candidate, and I feel bad for Rangers fans.  This is exactly the sort of thing the team didn't need.

Callahan is a big loss!
But if anyone beleives that there is no chance they can win it all is nuts!
Any team making the playoffs has a shot!
This isn't basketball!

You reap what you sow???  Getting blindsided after delivering cheap shots would qualify for that, but blocking shots is annoying??  You, gentlesir, are an a$$hole!!

That style of play is the only reason they're still in the playoff hunt and players like Callahan and Girardi are the life of the Rangers based on this style of sacrificing their bodies for the team. Annoying? You're annoying

Playing gutsy defensive hockey is so annoying. Should Callahan jumped out of the way of the Chara slapshot after they just pulled off a huge comeback and took the lead in the final minutes of a game they absolutely needed? I'm sorry playing with heart and soul annoys you, maybe you should stick to watching NBA basketball.

MullicaHill... Seriously?

"You reap what you sow?" Is that a joke? How is that style of hockey the least bit annoying? How can you even compare that to the annoying trap-hockey the Devils play? Are you a hockey fan? Do you understand the game? Your comment is so flawed in so many ways I can't even begin to write my thesis called "MullicaHill... Assclown? Or Naivete?"

All the Rangers do is dive and jump in front of shots. It's pretty damn effective, and they're probably better at it than anyone else. That said, it's the most annoying style of hockey since the Devils brought in the trap. And this is what you get when you play like that. Look at how many of this type of injury they've had this year. Oh well... you reap what you sow.
