Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference was fined $2,500 for his post-goal celebration in the second period of Game 4 on Thursday.

Cameras caught Ference flip the Bell Centre crowd the bird after he scored to make it a one-goal game. The Bruins eventually won the game, 5-4, in overtime to even the best-of-7 series at 2-2. The NHL announced the fine -- the largest allowed under the collective bargaining agreement -- on Friday.

The Globe and Mail reports what what CBC analyst Glenn Healy said after the gesture and whether punishment was warranted:
“It’s what he does after he scores the goal that enrages me,” Healy said. “Andrew Ference, you better get ready to open up your wallet because this little act here after you scored the goal ... isn’t called for.”

There's also the possibility of a suspension. The NHL suspended Canadiens defenseman James Wisniewski, who was then with the New York Islanders, two games for an obscene gesture in October.

Since this is family website, let's just say Wisniewski's gesture was just slightly more graphic than what Ference did Thursday.

Here's a look:

Ference gives Montreal crowd a salute, fined

You Boston "fans" are hilarious.  Most of you robots jumped on the NESN bandwagon back in early 2003 and have been obiediantly directed through ESPN and Larry Lucchino on how to think ever since.  How can any of you clowns insult Montreal?  The Canadiens have one of the most storied franchises in the history of any sport, much less hockey.  Quebec LOVES hockey...to the point where the province used to support two teams (then Bettman destroyed hockey to supposedly make more money).  Nobody gives a sh!t that Brad Ference gives people the finger...but I will re-communicate to all you zealots that celebrating after one goal, jumping up and down after winning the wild card, and victory through cheating have all been Boston traditions for decades (along with a "caucasions only" hiring process).

Most of you meatheads don't even watch hockey because if you did, you would know that this article is just another meaningless opportunity for you mindless clown shoes to express your "Boston Globe directed" opinions to the masses.  All of your recycled avatars of the Patriots logo or a red sock point to one thing, you don't watch hockey.  Why do I know that?  Because your account names are titles such as "PatSox07", "Patriots Rock", and "I've got Man Love for David Ortiz"...  What is really funny, are your takes on Montreal fans supposedly acting classless as if they should just be silent in their own stadium whenever Boston comes to town.  You guys are a fad that has gone on long enough.  Its a tired joke.  I don't even follow the Montreal Canadiens, but I know enough about hockey to respect the franchise and I follow enough sports to know that Boston fans have little room to critique opposing teams fans in their own stadium.  Brad Ference and the rest of the Boston Bandwagon are one big "tool" shed.

p.s.  Cam Neely is a dork-bus too...Go Rangers.  Laughing

Don't insult the anthem of another nation.  This goes beyond spitting, fighting, cheap shots etc... People have given and still are giving their lives for freedom...Not cool.  Let me also state...Canadians have given their lives for freedom.

What's your point?  I don't get it......  And when you said "they" insulted the U.S.A a sentence earlier, I hope you were talking only about the Habs fans and not Canadians in general, but I know you weren't.   You guys need to keep things in perspective and quit acting like babies and being so touchy.   A bunch of hockey fans in the city of Montreal booed the U.S.A national anthem.   The city of Montreal represents a whopping .05 percent of the population of Canada.   And I bet not ALL in the stands were booing.  Half booing would make a lot of noise which takes us down to a quarter of one percent of the country.   This means that 99.50 percent of Canadians weren't even there that day...... give me a break from crap like this.

Bruins' Ference gives Montreal crowd a salute

I would like to thank this article for reminding me of the wsniewski - Avery incident, which was HILARIOUS, the best thing the Islanders contributed to hockey this season.

Tballgame,

You do realize Ference is Canadian himself right?

Yes I do.  They insulted the USA.  Boo the players, throw octopuses on the ice, run on the ice I don't care...Don't insult the anthem of another nation.  This goes beyond spitting, fighting, cheap shots etc... People have given and still are giving their lives for freedom...Not cool.  Let me also state...Canadians have given their lives for freedom.  Which is why I would never even think of doing that.  I respect other nations and the way they choose to do things.  All nations are different.  Our Nation has had many black eyes through out history and we hopefully learn and move on.  But to hear those boos just enraged me.  TO put it in simpler terms...if you went to a high school game when you were in high school and the team across the river booed and crash cymbals when your school song was playing you would have been mad...This is our Country's song!

Bruins' Ference gives Montreal crowd a salute

I think you all are missing the point. There's a reason why Andrew Ferrence gets paid $2.25M per year to be a "professional" hockey player and play a game for a living (and he's an average player, not even a great player). Fans pay on average $150 per ticket to attend games in Montreal. Not that it gives the fans the right to do anything they want, but booing and yelling insults is nothing new to hockey (and not only in Montreal). I go to the Garden regularly and I'll be there Saturday to hear the fans boo PK Subban again. I can't wait to hear Bruins fan cheer "U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A", especially since the only decent American player on the team is Tim Thomas. Even the coach is French Canadian... Let's face it, fans go to the rink to have a good time and blow off some steam; this is not a black tie affair, so please stop pretending to be offended by booing.

You all can say what you want about the Montreal fans; at the end of the day, the Bell Center is always sold out and the fans buy a ton of NHL gear and travel to other rinks (e.g., Boston) to attend games. Players like Andrew Ferrence benefit financially from the passion of the Montreal fans and he's expected to be the "bigger man" as the "professional" who pockets millions.

I think we can all agree what Ferrence did was unprofessional. Having said that, there is no comparison to booing the National Anthem of a country. Blowing off steam???Really?  Booing a National Anthem is blowing off steam?

Booing players, razzing players, cheering on your team.. all perfectly acceptable.. Booing a National Anthem is classless, sad and disgraceful .. calling 911 for a hockey hit is insane!

Maybe not all Montreal fans stoop to that level, but a alot do. In the end it's a game, but if you can't tell the difference between chanting USA USA USA and booing a National Anthem of another country, then you my friend need your head examined.

GO BRUINS!!!

Bruins' Ference gives Montreal crowd a salute

First off I am a bruins fan and hate the habs, I hate their style of play, and I hate their fans. Lets not forget the fact that for years canadian fans have been booing the national anthem. Classy. But its stuff like this that makes the rivalry so much better. I love boston vs Montreal in the playoffs, nothing better. Its like the Yankees vs Red Sox in baseball. Everyone can complain about Chara or Ferrence it doesnt matter. It all fuels the rivalry whether it is right or wrong. Both Boston and Montreal have had regretable offensives. To your point about Montreal fans and sell outs, Montreal really is the Yankees of hockey, more championships and the most loyal fans, and a great tradition. I still hate them... (in a sports sense, Montreal is a really nice city). I cant wait for game 5, go B's

Bruins' Ference gives Montreal crowd a salute

First off I'm a Habs fan in Montreal.  Some of you posters are either illiterate or live by assumptions.  Where in the article does it say that Habs fans are crying over this?  Or in any other related article?  I laughed my butt off when I saw Ference flip off the crowd, as did almost every other Hab and Bruins fan that was in the bar watching the game last night.  Nobody is crying about being flipped the bird.  3 games left...plenty of hockey...see you in game 5 Bruins fans!

BTW, if you ever come to Montreal for a game you'll see that you're always received with respect, and that we appreciate opposing fans sporting their team colours.  I had a blast last night with about 10 Bruins fans...and the insults were flying all night, but all in good fun.  Wish the result was different though :(

As for some idiots at the Bell Center booing the Star Spangled Banner, the majority of the real Habs fans find this absolutely despicable.  Unfortunately there are a bunch of ignorant seperatists in this province, and even more unfortunately we have to deal with them on a daily basis.
