Ference gives Montreal crowd a salute, fined

Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference was fined $2,500 for his post-goal celebration in the second period of Game 4 on Thursday.

Cameras caught Ference flip the Bell Centre crowd the bird after he scored to make it a one-goal game. The Bruins eventually won the game, 5-4, in overtime to even the best-of-7 series at 2-2. The NHL announced the fine -- the largest allowed under the collective bargaining agreement -- on Friday.

The Globe and Mail reports what what CBC analyst Glenn Healy said after the gesture and whether punishment was warranted:
“It’s what he does after he scores the goal that enrages me,” Healy said. “Andrew Ference, you better get ready to open up your wallet because this little act here after you scored the goal ... isn’t called for.”

There's also the possibility of a suspension. The NHL suspended Canadiens defenseman James Wisniewski, who was then with the New York Islanders, two games for an obscene gesture in October.

Since this is family website, let's just say Wisniewski's gesture was just slightly more graphic than what Ference did Thursday.

Here's a look:

Bruins' Ference gives Montreal crowd a salute

I certainly don't condone what Ference did, but the Montreal fans are the worst in all of professional sports. What Ference did is probably what every other athlete would like to do in that building!!

My bad, I did not know that the finger was a curse in French!!!  Ference was probably just giving the finger back to the fans who were giving it to him after he scored.  Booing the American National Anthem???!!  Ference was treating the fans the way the fans treated him.  Good lesson for kids.

All this crap about Ference`s  action????  What about all the behavior in the crowd and the constant  booing of another country`s national athem??  While very few  would welcome his actions, I am far more insulted by the booing of our neighbor to the south`s Anthem.  Fine but no suspension....

This is pretty typical of a Boston franchise.  What really will impress the masses is the lack of penalty that will be imposed on this player.  There is a big push for the Bruins to win the cup since they are the only NESN covered organization that has not won a championship.  There is not going to be a suspension for this...not for a Boston player because it could affect the outcome of the playoffs.  He will be fined and that is it.  A suspension is as likely as a Boston coach getting thrown or suspended out of football for repeatedly cheating throughout the season and the Super Bowl.  It has the same amount of integrity as a steroid investigation into MLB performed by the chairman of the board of one of the teams in the league.  Andrew Ference was not "giving the bird", he took "over the counter supplements in the past" that keeps him from making a fist.  He is just "Ference being Ference" and he needs to "cowboy up", because "we believe".

Right on Steve....also...is there anyone on the PLANET that views Andy Ference as a role model? Only die hard hockey fans even know who the guy is. He's not exactly a household name. This is probably the most anyone has ever written about the guy in his life.

maybe taking a 7yr old to a playoff hockey game with all the drunks and fighting should be your first concern, not that a player showed the middle finger. You make the decision to bring your child to that environment knowing full well what goes on there...this isnt golf, Yaa Kno?

furthermore, PARENTS shouldnt portray pro atheletes as role models just because they play a game for a living. Would you see a CEO on the streets and tell your kids to be just like that man/women? how do you know they dont steal from the elderly and kick small children? Grow up and be a parent to your child not a jellyfish P C weasel hopeing that TV and video games will show your kid how to be a good human being. Maybe then our society wont be over populated with immoral hypocrites that condemn passionate hockey players but prolly have no problem cheating on their taxes or wife or welfare or whatever else you liberal hate spewing cows cheat on.

Bruins' Ference gives Montreal crowd a salute

As both a Bruins fan and a sports fan I absolutely loved it. I almost actually was ROFLMAO when I saw it happen. We need one of two things in professional sports; Either more actions like this showing the opposing fans what little regard a player has for them and all the crap home fans say and do, (yes sometimes I am the home fan doing the crap and I would've given a standing O for gesturing back), OR the fans need to be courteous and respectful throughout the game. Isn't it interesting that there seems to no outrage or YouTube video of the ever so respectful and poliye Canadian fans chanting f-you to Chiara? More polite respectful nation my a$$. When fans stop chanting obscenities, waving derogatory signs and cease all around heckling then and only then can expect civilized treatment from the athletes. The price of admission let you in to see the contest not to act like a boor and treat the opposition like they some for of less than human lifeform.

Makes me laugh that Habs fans are getting their panties in a bunch of this. Its all well and good for their fans to chant F--K Chara or Bruins Suck or whatever other dimwitted chant they can come up with but if a player gives a little back its an outrage? Come on here people! Get off your high horse...youre no better than what Ference did.

This isnt like he ran into the stands and started punching a guy thats been taunting him all game...he gave the old "screw u" sign to a crowd that wouldnt probably piss on him if he were on fire. Get a life Monreal! no wonder why the only thing worthwhile in your city are the strip clubs...youre all a bunch of P*ssies.
