Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference was fined $2,500 for his post-goal celebration in the second period of Game 4 on Thursday.

Cameras caught Ference flip the Bell Centre crowd the bird after he scored to make it a one-goal game. The Bruins eventually won the game, 5-4, in overtime to even the best-of-7 series at 2-2. The NHL announced the fine -- the largest allowed under the collective bargaining agreement -- on Friday.

The Globe and Mail reports what what CBC analyst Glenn Healy said after the gesture and whether punishment was warranted:
“It’s what he does after he scores the goal that enrages me,” Healy said. “Andrew Ference, you better get ready to open up your wallet because this little act here after you scored the goal ... isn’t called for.”

There's also the possibility of a suspension. The NHL suspended Canadiens defenseman James Wisniewski, who was then with the New York Islanders, two games for an obscene gesture in October.

Since this is family website, let's just say Wisniewski's gesture was just slightly more graphic than what Ference did Thursday.

Here's a look:

Thank you Rikki. Hockey is the last manly sport left of the four major ones and they are even trying to feminize it taking out all the big hits. The average person watches a NASCAR race to see a crash. The average person watches figure skating to see somebody wipe out. The average person watches hockey to see this kind of stuff.

Stogking....you're kidding me about protecting 7 year olds right? Someone already pointed out the F*** you Chara chants that are basically on a shiftly basis out there. Now you want to talk about America vs. Canada? Joke kiddo. The fans make it that. They didn't like the hit from a Slovakian Player, on their American Player, who plays for a Canadian team....this is why Chara is booed....and I find it HILARIOUS that the P.A. announcer up in Montreal has to REMIND their fans not to boo the American National anthem by listing each of the 8 American players names that play for the Habs before the singing. No other city in the NHL has to do that. Back to the original point, a middle finger won't scar anyone for life. Where is your outrage over James Wisniewski's gesture a little while ago? That's what I thought. P.S. Habs fans aren't alone either....the ridiculous USA chants that some fans start at the garden in Boston is equally as annoying . Get a clue and cheer the game losers.

I love this. Hockey needs more rough and tumble. I am so tired of the kinder, gentler Sidney Crosby NHL.

Mudville9....GREAT point...and it's hilarious to listen to them BOO Chara every time he gets the puck, especially when he touches it for a half second, they sound ridiculous....and it is made to be USA vs Canada because of where the TEAMS are located, not because of where the players on each team were born...the FANS make it out to be USA vs Canada, not the players. I may be wrong, but last time I checked Boston was in the U.S. and Montreal was in Canada.....I don't know, maybe I'm wrong...I never was too good at Geography

Did anyone see Horton checked into the stancion (sp?) the other night? I guess THAT was just finishing off a check, right Hab fans...though Horton did get a little banged up from it (call the cops). What Ference did was retarded and his claim that it was an accident is insulting and ignorant but Hab fans need to kick their skirts off...Good Lord they cry about EVERYTHING...and realize their team is in danger of coughing up this series (we Bruin fans know what that is like!!!!) Great series so far, very entertaining

Well...from 95% of the comments so far on Ference's behavior it seems he fits right in with the rest of Boston morons whose IQ appears so low that they can't even conceive of language (English, French, sign or other) that conveys decency, respect, or class.  "Duh, it's my freedom."  "Duh, it's the sort of language I can't get by without using every 5 minutes or so."  Wow, must be some sort of cess pool over there.

Lets just not forget these guys are role models and we are trying to teach kids at an early age how to play hockey. And i'm not a habs fan by the way... But 20 of the 28 players on the boston  roster are Canadian including Bergeron , only 1 american on the team the goalie. theres more americans on Montreal!!! You people making it  U.S vs Canada, funny.

Ference didn't do anything I don't do 100 times a night when Boston plays in Montreal. Get over it.
