Ference gives Montreal crowd a salute, fined

Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference was fined $2,500 for his post-goal celebration in the second period of Game 4 on Thursday.

Cameras caught Ference flip the Bell Centre crowd the bird after he scored to make it a one-goal game. The Bruins eventually won the game, 5-4, in overtime to even the best-of-7 series at 2-2. The NHL announced the fine -- the largest allowed under the collective bargaining agreement -- on Friday.

The Globe and Mail reports what what CBC analyst Glenn Healy said after the gesture and whether punishment was warranted:
“It’s what he does after he scores the goal that enrages me,” Healy said. “Andrew Ference, you better get ready to open up your wallet because this little act here after you scored the goal ... isn’t called for.”

There's also the possibility of a suspension. The NHL suspended Canadiens defenseman James Wisniewski, who was then with the New York Islanders, two games for an obscene gesture in October.

Since this is family website, let's just say Wisniewski's gesture was just slightly more graphic than what Ference did Thursday.

Here's a look:

Did the Habs fans get their cell phones out and call the cops?  Maybe Ference can spend time in jail with Chara and if Habs fans can be offended by enough Boston players to have a bunch of them arrested their team will have a better shot of winning the series.  Remember Boston that visiting teams are not allowed to check, shoot, score, prevent Canadian shots from unfettered access into goals, or express themselves to @hole Canadian fans without prior permission from the Canadian government.

If the New England Blazers can have a stripper contest at half time, then a hockey player flipping the bird to a bunch of french speaking PR**KS shouldn't even warrant anything other than the canadien fans getting a little red faced.  Just one more thing for them to whine about!!!!  Hopefully it will provoke them to take a few cheap shots tomorrow and give us some power play opportunities.

Love it. Habs fans get what they deserve. I can assure you that gesture pales in comparison to what they were giving him. Bruins in six would be the best treat in my Easter basket.

What he did was more than likely a minor gesture compared to what the fans were giving him the whole game. This was his way of shoving it back in their face.

Pay the miniscule fine to a charity of Max Pacioretty's choice in his name, and it'll be a settled issue.  The teams hate each other, and that wears off on the players, so emotions will sometimes take over.  A certain crowd at the Bell Centre once booed the American national anthem during a playoff bout between these two clubs, so they can take a little finger wave here and there.  Habbies are welcome to repeat the favor in Boston if they steal another one there.  GO Bs!!!!!
