Octopus thrower enters not-guilty plea

Posted on: April 28, 2011 3:03 pm

The Detroit Red Wings fan who was arrested after he tossed an octopus on the ice pleaded not guilty and asked for a jury trial earlier this week.

Charlie Graves, a resident of Farmington, Mich., was arrested at Game 1 of the first-round series against the Phoenix Coyotes on April 13 after he tossed the octopus onto the ice, a tradition for Detroit playoff games that stretches back decades. He was fined $500 fine and was charged with disorderly conduct.

Police said afterward that the NHL had requested them to clamp down on octopi tossers.

A defiant Graves, who was in court on Tuesday, explained to WDIV-TV why he pleaded not guilty:

"It is a 50-something-odd-year tradition," Graves said. "I feel the city of Detroit takes pride in their tradition, and if the (NHL) commissioner thinks we are going to go down without a fight, he is wrong."

Graves said he will fight the charge in support of the tradition. .

"I pleaded not guilty, of course," Graves said. "I'm going to fight for this tradition. And so, I have to come back in July for a trial, and I'll be lawyered up."

Octopus thrower enters not-guilty plea

WOW whats next call in the S.W.A.T. team when people toss hats on the ice after a hat trick??????? This is getting crazy anything to stop the fans from getting pumped up before, during, and after a game. And we all know once the fans get pumped up well then the team will follow. So i say let the tradition continue and leave the fans alone. and worry about the more importent stuff going on in sports.

Let me guess, is it PETA who is harassing you Gary?  They should probably be more concerned with that beaver tail comb over you're sporting.  Way to further alienate the fans retard.

I hope he wins because whats the difference between throwing hats on the ice or an octopus. Why should a guy be arrested for throwing an octopus on the ice when your allowed to throw hats on the ice.

Great point.  Absolutely ridiculous. If they want to ban somebody from an arena there isn't much you can do...it's their property and they can do with it as they please.  But to criminally charge him???  Wow....

This is BS, I am a big time red wings fan and I think the NHL is just like the NCAA. Nazi dictators that need to stay the hell out of trivial things that do no harm.  I live in Florida but if I could get up to a game I would sneak in the biggest damn octopus I could get in and toss that son of b*tch right on the ice.  GO WINGS!

Good, hang the guy. What a gross waste of life. Why not throw a dead cat or a roadkill opossom on the ice?

Seriously, hang him?

Also, fans throw baseballs back onto the field after the visiting team hits a Homerun pretty much every time (at every stadium).  Do we need to start arresting these people too???  I mean a baseball would probably do more damage than an octupus...
