Canucks win after "chicken wing" penalty call

It took until the 19th overtime game this postseason before a power play goal decided the outcome.

Ryan Kesler not only deflected in the game-winner as the Vancouver Canucks secured a 3-2 victory in Game 3 of the second-round series against the Nashville Predators Tuesday night, but he also drew the somewhat controversial penalty that resulted on the man-advantage  situation.

Kesler and Preds defenseman Shea Weber battled for the puck in the corner, a clash that eventually moved up the boards toward the blue line. Weber’s stick became entangled with Kesler, which resulted in a hooking minor called on Weber.

“I thought it was a little bit light considering all the other stuff that was going on,” Predators coach Barry Tortz told reporters after the game. “I’ve seen it. It was as a good sell by Kesler, a chicken wing with the stick and he kept moving. If you look at it, Webs is pushing on him trying to take his stick out of there. I’ve seen it before. One of the earlier games he drew a couple penalties like that by chicken-winging the stick and holding it here. They’ll say it’s a good penalty. I’ll say it’s a bad penalty.”

The Canucks scored 40 seconds into the power play to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 series.

The sequence that led to the penalty occurs about midway through this clip:

Canucks win after "chicken wing" penalty call

Looks as though Poile should have complained about the refs as Gillis did in the previous round rather than complain about the green men. I think it was a penalty during the regular season but not in the playoffs and especially not in OT.

Man o man, do I agree with you! Can't believe that BS call. Definetly a makeup call, but this is why they have to do something about the officals. For Christ's sake, there is enough of them on the damn ice, you would think they could get it right. It ruined what was a fantastic game and left a sour taste in my mouth....AWFUL!!

"It was as a good sell by Kesler, a chicken wing with the stick and he kept moving" & "One of the earlier games he drew a couple penalties like that by chicken-winging the stick and holding it here"  These lines are sports gold and Im giggling everytime I say them aloud..   OnPointW/ChaseQ

I'm sure Mike Gillis will come out and say the Canucks didn't derserve to win because of a bad call.

I'm not a Canucks fan and would like to see the Predators beat them but I don't blame Gillis for the complaining he did last round.  I'm not saying he was right..... but some good calls went Vancouver's way the next game so what he did worked.   It's how it works in the NHL..... whether we hear about it or not, teams and their management team are constantly in the league's ear trying to gain an advantage.

Canucks win after "chicken wing" penalty call

Tough call and in my recollection thus far after watching every single playoff game of the canucks { including being at game 7 against Chicago} ticky tacky calls often pop up...especially after the several missed calls....they missed a big one shortly before and everyone watching just knew the whistle was gonna blow on something tiny.

Nashville is awesome at killing power plays, and in fact they`ve scored short handed against us...they should have killed off this penalty.

I watched vancouver kill off a game 7 ticky tacky call in overtime when burrows received a bogus hooking call behind the net. The difference was vancouver entrenched themselves and would not let chicago score...

Nashville could have done the same.....

What garbage. To end a playoff game on a ticky tack call like that is disgraceful. Not a fan of either team but watching as a hockey fan even makes you hate the new NHL. You let the teams decide the game based on skill not on a terrible call like that.
