Matthew Barnaby, a former NHL tough guy and current hockey analyst for ESPN, pleaded not guilty to five charges on Saturday, a day after he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence in a suburb of Buffalo on Friday night.

The Buffalo News reports the Barnaby, 38, was released on his own recognizance. While police have released few details, the incident reportedly involves his estranged wife and another adult. Law enforcement officials told the newspaper that there were no injuries and Barnaby made no physical contact with the alleged victims.

Barnaby faces up to four years in prison on the single felony count of criminal mischief. He’s also charged with criminal contempt, criminal trespass, harassment and aggravated harassment. Amherst Town Justice Mark G. Farrell ordered Barnaby to steer clear of anyone involved in the case.

"We just learned of this so it would be inappropriate to comment," ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said in an e-mail to CBSSports.com Friday night.

Amherst police responded to Barnaby’s home around 6:15 p.m. and The Buffalo News reports that he was taken into custody a short time later.

Barnaby, a native of Ottawa who also does TV work for TSN, played seven seasons in Buffalo before he continued his NHL career in Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, New York (Rangers), Colorado, Chicago and Dallas. He played in 834 games -- racking up 2,562 penalty minutes -- before he retired in 2007.

He probably blind-sided her when she wasn't paying attention just like he used to do to guys in the NHL. Good to see he hasn't lost his sense of classiness since he retired from hockey.

ESPN sure knows how to pick their analysts.  Starblazer mentioned Tirico, Rose, Phillips, Irvin, and now Barnaby.  You also left out Sean Salisbury, who once photocoped his "goods" in a copy machine.  They are a classless network who hire adequate ex players and bums as analysts and only care about and cover certain teams:  The Yankees, Red Sox (MLB); Cowboys, Patriots, Steelers (NFL) and the Lakers, Heat, Celtics, and sometimes my beloved Knicks (NBA).  They lick the behinds of certain athletes like Lebron, Tebow, Favre, Cam Newton, Tiger, Bonds, and Manny.  They are a joke and sure know how to pick their analysts.  Jalen Rose just had a DWI and he kept his job, Phillips wasn't immediately fired, and neither was Irvin.  They also have some of the most biased people also.  But if this guy did this, he should be canned immediately as their hockey coverage is a joke as it is.  They spend a minute on SportsCenter talking about the games and have two people (he and Melrose to do it). I am not a huge hockey fan, but I do enjoy the playoffs and it should have more coverage than it receives.

bluenoser44: No, it doesn't. You only hear about things going around and coming around WHEN THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS! Most of the time, absolutely nothing comes around, so of course no one hears about it. Think about it, moron.

Once a goon always a goon. ESPN us a joke for having this neanderthal and the mullet-headed maroon as "analysts" for what they try to pass off as hockey coverage or analysis. I hope they throw his arse in jail and his ex-gets his pension to boot.
Yeah, once we find out what exactly he did wrong, as he didn't even physically touch anyone. What kind of messed up world are you living in?
