Lil' Jon, Bruckheimer pop up in Atlanta rumors

We've had Tom Glavine. There's been the mysterious "Balkan." Former player Anson Carter, now in the music and apparel business, entered the picture, too.

Now add the names Lil' Jon and Jerry Bruckheimer to the list of potential owners to keep the Thrashers in Atlanta? According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, that's exactly what you should do.

The latest talk swirling around the financially ailing Atlanta Thrashers has the team possibly staying in Atlanta courtesy of – wait for it – Atlanta hip hop artist and producer Lil’ Jon and big-time film and TV producer Jerry Bruckheimer, reports Atlanta Business Chronicle broadcast partner WXIA-TV.

The Atlanta-based rap mogul and movie producer would make for an interesting pairing and would certainly have the money needed to back a franchise that was valued at $135 million by Forbes. And while Lil' Jon might seem like an odd choice to own a team on the surface considering he can be found courtside at almost every Miami Heat game played this season, he is an avid hockey fan, saying in the past how much he enjoyed watching the Atlanta Flames playing back in the day at the Omni.

At this point, I'm wondering who will be next? Either way, the time is running short if Atlanta wants to stay in town. It's gotten to the point where NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly won't guarantee the Thrashers will stick around, a rather damning statement at this point considering how adamant Gary Bettman and the NHL were in the Coyotes not emmigrating from Phoenix.

Lil' Jon, Bruckheimer pop up in Atlanta rumors

The team has not be in the top 20 in attendence a single year over the past decade, routinely drawing less than 15k a game.  In 06-07, when they had a bonifide good team, they still couldnt crack the top 20.  Last year, with a good young exciting team, still the bottom 5 in attendence.  Maybe, if they get new local blood to buy the team, it could succeed, but that person would most liklely be throwing away 100+ million of their own dollars on a fluke chance.

But it just seems highly, highly unlikely that hockey can survive in a city where the Braves cannot even fill their stadium while winning for a decade.

Not a bad take on the whole; i especially like the last paragraph and I don't disagree with the fact that Winnipeg is a smallish city, but hockey in any city is more than how often Sportscenter shows it on TV.  I also disagree that Atlanta is an important market (any more than any city with a team).  It's largish population should have already resulted in increased revenues from attendance and corporate support.

What needs to be widely accepted as truth is that modestly funded ownership groups inevitably fail.  Whether it be personal schisms, failure to return projected revenue, cash shortfall in other ventures, owners looking for a new toy... ad infinitum.  They fail.  They are best owned by large local corporate entities or single mega-rich owners who take on supplementary stake holders after acquisition.  (read Ted Turner/ TBS) Not groups of dabblers with a few bucks that are destined to wind up in beggars court at the first bump in the revenue stream.  This must be addressed by the NHL in their financial vetting system and Bettman must be accountable for the imbalance between expansion and sustainability.

All that being said, Atlanta should not move just to bail out the owners of the team.  I wouldn't let them move until the search for new local ownership was exhausted, at the current owner's expense.  A second move would be disgraceful.

dont turn this into a racial thing bigal, thats almost as tired as mikeys 'everyones prejudiced against the south having hockey' rants. And whoever said its gonna take longer than 10 years for hockey to work in the south needs to step away from the bong. What do you need 50 years for it to work? When teams are on the pay to play program (alas Phoenix) Id say thats a failed venture
