Canucks' Raymond out after fracturing back

BOSTON --- Vancouver Canucks forward Mason Raymond suffered a  vertebral compression fracture  when he collided awkwardly into the boards seconds in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final on Monday night.

The team announced Tuesday that Raymond will be out three to four months. These types of back injuries often do not require surgery.

Raymond spun into the corner boards after he got tangled up with Boston Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk. Replays showed that Raymond’s legs and tailbone took most of the impact with the boards.

Raymond lay on the ice for several minutes before he was helped off by two teammates. He was later transported to an area hospital.

Raymond had no points in the series, but was a fixture on the Canucks' second line.

"Obviously, Mason is a large part of our team," Canucks forward Manny Malhotra said. "To lose a guy early in the game, it changes so many things, as far as how the process goes on the bench and changes. Playing with different wingers and that shuffling happened early, so I think that is a huge blow for any team, especially with such a good player like Mason."

Canucks' Raymond out after fracturing back

I actually liked watching Raymond as he was not in the model of the Sedins,Burrows,Torres,Ehrhoff,Edler and even kesler. The kid plays hard and has great skills and doesnt do the diving/cheap shot stuff. Kind of like Malhotra. Anyway I hope he has a fast recovery from a damn freakish injury and is good to go as soon as possible.

Hard to see any intent to injure here.  Not often you'll see a guy hurt going into the boards azz first.

He didnt skate off the ice, more like two guys holding him up taking him off. And shhhhhhuuuut Up about this being dirty. It was a hockey play, a normal play that happens about 40 times a game, just a freak 1 in a million injury.

I'm not happy about the hit but I don't see any definitive evidence that there was intent to injure, was kind of freaky.  suspect he could have let up especially as it was no where near the play. It's been that kind of series, unfortunatly. I suspect if there's a repeat/similar situation in game seven, it will force the refs into calling it th Canucks way.
Could be a factor in How Boston plays in game seven, hit wise.....

I agree with you to an extent.  Boychuck could have released Raymond earlier but how many times do you hear that players need to "finish the check"?  I honestly thought it was a relatively innocent-looking play.  There were many plays during this series where I thought bodily injury was intended.  This wasn't one of them.  I don't know Boychuck's heart or mind but I don't think anyone could have foreseen the damage that check would cause.  Furthermore, I think the officials did an excellent job last night.  They were quick to call the dirty work and the dives and I thought they maintained control.  All in all, I would say that was one of the better officiated games I've seen during this playoff season.

As with all sports, the potential for injury is always there...that being said, a speedy recovery to Raymond.

This incidents is unfortunately a symptom of how PATHETIC the officiating has been in the ENTIRE playoffs.  Boychuk had plenty of time to release Raymand before he got to the boards..... the puck was already up the boards towards the neutral zone.  Was it dirty?,..... hard to say.... but it is how this series has gone..... the NASTINESS continues because the officials have selectively allowed it to.  Edlers hit behind the net..... DIRTY.... should be out for game 7... and I'm a CANUCKS fan..... Boychuck.... shouldbe out for game 7..... but the blames lies with the league.....the NHL has  the poorest quality officiating of all the pro sports and we have seen why over the last 7 weeks.  The stuff that goes on after the whistle has been DIRTY..... Lucic, Thornton, .... DIRTY..... Burrows.... DIRTY...... they have embarraed their uniforms.... but the blame is firmly with the league.....

How do the fans know he's hurt?  They were reacting to him lying on the ice like all the other Canucks. Who were NOT hurt.
They all act like their hurt constantly.

you are an idiot. I'm a "rookie" because I'm not such a loser to be posting their stupid opinions on this board. you missed the point.

Congrats on being an "All Star" I'm proud of you.
