J-E-T-S JETS! JETS! JETS!

No, we aren't in the Meadowlands. That's the new (err, old) name of the NHL franchise in Winnipeg. The announcement was supposed to be made tonight prior to Winnipeg's seventh pick in the draft, but word leaked early thanks to winger Evander Kane and TSN's Darren Dreger.

There was a tremendous outpouring for the return of the Jets nickname when it was announced professional hockey was returning to the 'Peg. What is not known at this point is of the team logo and jersey will be the same, but it probably won't. Expect an updated version of the old red, white and blue logo, or maybe even a new logo and color scheme altogether.

Some of the other names thrown around included Falcons, Ice Bears and Moose, the name of Winnipeg's IHL team that's being replaced.

All in all, it's the right move for the franchise. There was probably some hesitation to go back to the Jets, instead trying to brand the franchise with a new identity. But there's something to be said for nostalgia. There are people who loved the Jets and their logo. There would be a lot of NHL fans happy to see the Jets playing the Hartford Whalers or Quebec Nordiques again.

So for those keeping score at home, the history of the Atlanta Thrashers currently resides with the Winnipeg Jets and the history of the Winnipeg Jets currently resides with the Phoenix Coyotes.

No word on how long it will take until the new logo is designed.

Reports: Winnipeg to go with Jets for nickname

As a hockey fan, I love that Winnipeg is bringing back the Jets nickname.  It is a good fit.  It will be interesting to see if the old logo and colors are brought back or if they go to a new look.  Either way, it is good for the NHL to have the Winnipeg Jets back.

Winnipeg Jets, next team in Canada the Hamilton Senators!!!
The NHL already has the Senators in Ottawa. This is not going to be like the CFL, especially because they won't have two teams in the same province named the Senators. Besides that, Senators has no connection to Hamilton, so if Hamilton does move a team, they won't call them the Senators. This might be the most idiotic post ever.

Ice Bears would have been pretty cool.  Too bad.

Flacco, lame argument given that, at one point, there were 2 New York Giants teams in the same city in 2 different sports. There are dozens of Tigers and Bulldogs and Eagles in college football. Washington Redskins, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Blackhawks all refer to Native Americans in some way. It's history, live with it. Were you saying the same thing in 1972?

Your point is all well and good, except this same exact point was being made 40 years ago about the same name & city.  So, there is your history lesson on sport.  History keeps repeating indeed.

Congratulations on the team moving to Winnipeg. Though I understand the affection for the "Jets" name, it is disappointing.

Jets = retread and boring. There is an NFL team based in N.Y. that already uses the nickname.

An opportunbity to be unique and distinctive has been lost.

Oh, well, I'll have to find another NHL team to follow and root for because my lifelong interest in the NBA has about come to an end.

I would have went with Waxwings or Grosbeaks or such. And no, the Redwing nickname found for that team in Detroit has nothing to do with birds.

Best of luck to your team there in Winnipeg. :o)

NeptuneP2V,

sp; He was not saying the Jets were IHL, he was saying that the Moose are IHL (Some of the other names thrown around included Falcons, Ice Bears and Moose, the name of Winnipeg's IHL team that's being replaced). Maybe you need to read the article before jumping on meaasage board to trash someone. The Manitoba Moose were in the IHL from 1996 to about 2001 or so, then they moved to the AHL. At no point in time did he say the Jets were in the IHL.

I guess that explains the Amateur Level and a reputation of 6. Keep posting, but use your noodle. People will give you good ratings if you have any clue what you are talking about.
