J-E-T-S JETS! JETS! JETS!

No, we aren't in the Meadowlands. That's the new (err, old) name of the NHL franchise in Winnipeg. The announcement was supposed to be made tonight prior to Winnipeg's seventh pick in the draft, but word leaked early thanks to winger Evander Kane and TSN's Darren Dreger.

There was a tremendous outpouring for the return of the Jets nickname when it was announced professional hockey was returning to the 'Peg. What is not known at this point is of the team logo and jersey will be the same, but it probably won't. Expect an updated version of the old red, white and blue logo, or maybe even a new logo and color scheme altogether.

Some of the other names thrown around included Falcons, Ice Bears and Moose, the name of Winnipeg's IHL team that's being replaced.

All in all, it's the right move for the franchise. There was probably some hesitation to go back to the Jets, instead trying to brand the franchise with a new identity. But there's something to be said for nostalgia. There are people who loved the Jets and their logo. There would be a lot of NHL fans happy to see the Jets playing the Hartford Whalers or Quebec Nordiques again.

So for those keeping score at home, the history of the Atlanta Thrashers currently resides with the Winnipeg Jets and the history of the Winnipeg Jets currently resides with the Phoenix Coyotes.

No word on how long it will take until the new logo is designed.

Reports: Winnipeg to go with Jets for nickname

It is us, the fans, that spend our money and buy the tickets and merchandise for these sports franchises. it made perfect sense to listen to the fans. If they had been anything other than the Jets it would have been a terrible move. As a casual fan I might go out and buy Winnipeg merchandise because I always liked their color sheme and mascot. Quebec Nordiques anyone? I agree with the hamilton team as well. Can the NHL expand? It is clear that the NHL is back on the mend after the labor issues of a few years back.

I'm not really a fan of naming this team the Jets...because they aren't the Jets. It's been done before when a city gets a new team, such as the expansion Cleveland NFL franchise being named the Browns again. But it doesn't hide or change the fact that it is an entirely different franchise. The Winnipeg Jets are now the Phoenix Coyotes....this is a new franchise; why not start fresh with a new name for a new team?

Just my opinion. It does make it easier to put the teams colour and logo in the stands if they stick with the Jets as fans of the original team can dust off the old sweaters to wear to the games.

Keep the original name, I love it.  I'm from Minnesota and 10 plus years later, I still wish the Wild were the North Stars.

The Moose  was an AHL team. The IHL has been dead for quite a few years. I love when non hockey people write things they know little about.

I agree! This is asolutelythe RIGHT move!
The team should've NEVER been moved in the first place and it already has built in passion & marketin base for that team name & colors.
It s absolutely the right thing to do!
If anyone says "What about Phoenix? won't it cause confusion?"
I say no because they took a new name, Art Modell left the Browns name & colors when he moved the Browns to Baltimore, Clay Bennett - the hieving bastard he is at least left the Sonics name & colors in Seattle.
I hope they keep the red & blue color scheme, stay with something classic, no crazy stuff like purples or teals or anything like that, screw what colors are popular right now, stick with tradition!
I'm also glad they didn't go with the Ice Bears orMoose those names just reek of minor league hockey and that's not what this is, it's the NHL!
I agree that we also need to bring back the Whalers & the Nordiques, put hockey in cities that have a history of hockey, wth a fan base that will suport it through ups and downs and not the lame 'put a winner on the ice and we'll come" like we hear so many Thrasher & Coyotes fans saying.
I have said it before and I'll say it again and keep saying it: "A fandom is not defined by who sticks around when the team is winning but rather when it's rebuilding or hving a losing season, it's easy to hang around when the team is winning but where are you when they're down and need fan support? THAT is what defines a fandom!"
