J-E-T-S JETS! JETS! JETS!

No, we aren't in the Meadowlands. That's the new (err, old) name of the NHL franchise in Winnipeg. The announcement was supposed to be made tonight prior to Winnipeg's seventh pick in the draft, but word leaked early thanks to winger Evander Kane and TSN's Darren Dreger.

There was a tremendous outpouring for the return of the Jets nickname when it was announced professional hockey was returning to the 'Peg. What is not known at this point is of the team logo and jersey will be the same, but it probably won't. Expect an updated version of the old red, white and blue logo, or maybe even a new logo and color scheme altogether.

Some of the other names thrown around included Falcons, Ice Bears and Moose, the name of Winnipeg's IHL team that's being replaced.

All in all, it's the right move for the franchise. There was probably some hesitation to go back to the Jets, instead trying to brand the franchise with a new identity. But there's something to be said for nostalgia. There are people who loved the Jets and their logo. There would be a lot of NHL fans happy to see the Jets playing the Hartford Whalers or Quebec Nordiques again.

So for those keeping score at home, the history of the Atlanta Thrashers currently resides with the Winnipeg Jets and the history of the Winnipeg Jets currently resides with the Phoenix Coyotes.

No word on how long it will take until the new logo is designed.

YES! Only an 8 hour drive from the Twin Cities. Looks like MN gets its 2nd NHL team back. Time to pull the #13 Teemu jersey out of storage.

The league needs to give the Jets back their history and all stats. Teemu made history with that team not the Coyotes. Hawerchuk, Housley, and the rest of the really good players the put that jersey on deserve to be remembered in Jets colors not the Coyotes that they never played for.

  RavenDefense,

sp;      Thank you brother. Nice to see there are some people on  here who actually understand the written language we speak :)That was the point I was trying to make. As I waded through the replies and posts, there seem to be many people who balked after grade 6 English :)  I think Possessive's and Agreement start in grade 7 :)

At some point, some of these guys may actually clue in that NOBODY has said the JETS were EVER in the IHL.

For anyone still lost on this, the Article Says the 'Manitoba Moose used to be in the IHL'.

Hmmm, New York Jets wear green and white and the Winnipeg Jets wore red and blue... man, they are so similar! It's not like they out of the blue went with Jets. It's the name the team used for a few decades, probably since before you were born. Now if the Jets change their scheme and look eerily similar to the New York team, then you'd have a point, but until then, all they have in common is a nickname. Not a city, not a color, not a sport.

Actually, there is a bit more of a connection between the Winnipeg Jets and NY Jets. The owner of the "new" 1972 Winnipeg WHA franchise called his team the Jets because he was a NY Jets fan, and the Major Junior team in Winnipeg at that time had been called the Jets. The Jets name carried over when the WHA collapsed into the NHL in '79.

The nickname for the Winnipeg team was an absolute "no-brainer"! I'm quite sure that the Winnipeg fans had their input on the team being nicknamed the Jets. The old Winnipeg franchise was named the Jets before they bounced for Phoenix,so why not name the once Atlanta Thrashers team the Jets? Way to keep it real Winnipeg!

You guys are too funny! For us who remember Randy Carlisle with long hair playing for the Jets and that franchise established in the NHL some of us are ecstatic and realize the only name this team should be called is the JETS.  It's easy to get upset and try to do one up on each other but you're all acting like a bunch of sheilas.
