The Canucks have reached an agreement with defenseman Kevin Bieksa on a five-year, $23 million deal, tsn.ca reports. Included in Bieksa's contract is a no-trade clause.

Without the deal, Bieksa was headed for the unrestricted free-agent market, which opens Friday.

Bieksa, 30, has spent the entirety of his NHL career with the Canucks, entering the league in 2005. This season he combined with Dan Hamhuis to form one of the better defensive pairings in hockey after he was rumored to be on the trading block just last season.

He was stellar in the playoffs, scoring five goals and recording five assists as the Canucks came one win shy of their first Stanley Cup. Bieksa scored the series-ending goal against the San Jose Sharks after the puck seemed to magically bounce off the boards right on to his stick and nobody but him on the ice was aware.

The Canucks still have work to do with other free agents, including fellow defenseman Christian Ehrhoff. He figures to command a similar salary as Bieksa. Among other UFAs are Chris Higgins, Raffi Torres, Tanner Glass and Sami Salo.

Tend not to ever before regarded as that it had been this simple in any situation. I'd set in a superb present of my time looking for most people to produce very clear this matter evidently and you might be the one one particular that at any time well before did that. Kudos to you personally!

Hey. Detroit, you can have Salo.....

No thanks..... the Wings can re-sign another Salo for real cheap if they wanted to... his name is Salei.... doubt it though.   If anybody from the Canucks is a Wing pretty soon it'll be Erhoff.... nobody else.

That's a very good signing for the Canucks. 4.6 per is a lot lower than the projected 5.5 to 6 million that he could have gotten as a UFA.

I actually fancy Erhoff more than Bieksa and hope he's right behind him in signing with vancouver.

Well, Bieksa signing for what he did seems like a good deal for the Canucks. Strong, dependable defenseman. Especially, if he takes the next step over the next few seasns and truly joins the elite d-men in the league.

As much as I hate the Canucks and Bieksa, I have to admit this is an alright signing.  The only thing I would be worried about if I were a Canucks fan is the no-trade clause.  At least it's not a no-movement clause.

On a side note i hope that the RedWings scoop Erhoff up on friday.

Almost forgot. The more I look into it using capgeek.com and looking at the numbers, I won't be surprised at all if the Wings scoop Erhoff very early on July 1st.  If the Canucks can't afford to hold onto him there aren't too many other contenders that can afford him.  Erhoff is just turning 29 next month and is a really good dman.  Very nice offensive output and a nice plus/minus for two consecutive years is tough to come by.  He would be a perfect replacement for Rafalaski actually... same type of player except for a heck of a lot younger.  He made 3.1 million per season his last contract and I'm sure is asking the Canucks for Bieksa type money or even more.... There are so few really good UFA dmen left I can see Erhoff making a killing for years to come with his new contract coming up.  The only negative is what I already mentioned... there aren't too many contenders that can really afford him right now..... BUT... the Wings very much can afford him... easily.

Littleceasars.  Nice post.  The problem on these boards is a lot of people don't understand what supply and demand is and when you called it pure economics they didn't really get that either.  Bieksa wanted to stay in Vancouver because he's never played anywhere else and because it's one of the most beautiful cities out there.. BUT... Bieksa didn't have to stay in Vancouver because these people complaining can bet their ass had he become available July 1st he might have been gone in an hour for even more then 4.6 million dollars.  Way too many teams need dmen and Bieksa is coming off his best season yet... and he's still pretty young.... it's that simple.

And once again people need to stop talking about how expensive tickets are and how tough it's going to be for the average fan to go to a game.   In good hockey cities where teams sell out with thousands more begging to purchase seats the price is obviously going to skyrocket over time.  Why wouldn't it?  One of the things most fans don't understand ( and this goes with the supply and demand theory) is owners don't decide what the ticket prices are going to be, fans do.  Stop going to games and you'll suddenly see how fast ticket prices drop. Keep filling the seats game after game and prices have to go up.  What businessman on this planet would turn down the chance to make millions more just so the "average fan" can afford tickets when there are enough people with money willing to spend anything it takes???
