Sabres sign Ehrhoff to long-term contract

Less than 24 hours before acquiring his rights and just hours before free agency begins, the Buffalo Sabres have signed defenseman Christian Ehrhoff to a long-term contract, the team announced Thursday evening.

Bob McKenzie of TSN reports the deal could be for 10 years and $40 million.

Since turning down an offer to stay with the Canucks, Ehrhoff had his rights sent to the Islanders. After trying to sign him to a deal, Isles GM Garth Snow accepted that he would not be able to entice Ehrhoff to sign, he shipped his rights to Buffalo and a match was made.

Now Ehrhoff joins a retooled defensive corps in Buffalo that includes newcomer Robyn Regehr. Add in young Tyler Myers and they have the makings of a very nice blue line.

Ehrhoff brings plenty of offense from the back end, scoring 14 goals with 36 assists last season for the Presidents' Trophy-winning Canucks.

The Detroit Red Wings figured to be big contenders for Ehrhoff's services but they never got the chance. Instead they will have to look at the rest of the defensive market, which gets even paltrier without Ehrhoff available.

Tim Connolly was the Sabres version of Jeff Carter LK. Regular season stud and playoff no show. Let someone else take on that chump.

I'm sure the Caps will be considered "contenders". However, things get stale. They did in Philly. They are with Boudreau who would otherwise be mistaken for a 55 year old Level 3 if he eventually gets fired and is seen anywhere outside of DC.LOL.

The West is definitely the more top heavy conference. It won't take nearly as many points to qualify in the spring of 2012 here in the East. Toronto, Buffalo and the Rangers seem to be the 3 teams willing to overpay Richards. I once again, don't believe Richards will live up to the contract he's about to sign.

A very large if with Crosby and Malkin. Hate to say it from a hockey fan perspective, but I don't know if Crosby will ever be back as we know him. Some guys (Tim Connelly comes to mind) are different after they suffer a big time concussion. I just know the Flyers are loaded, the Bruins will have a hangover and the Sabres will build on a great second half of last year and are much improved heading into next year. Tough to count out Pens. One thing is for sure, the East will be fun to wacth.

Hate to say it LK. If Crosby and Malkin are healthy, Pitt will be a tough out if Fleury continues his high level of play.Bylsma deserved his Jack Adams. Boston has some age with Thomas and Chara but am sure they won't go down easily either.Thomas certainly had a career year at 37 but I have my doubts on him duplicating it. Even Roy and Brodeur declined rapidly after turning 37. We shall see.

I still think you need some toughness up front to be a true Stanley Cup contender. You have addressed your defense. Time will tell if you add some grit up front. As for the Flyers, I promise they won't go the whole year without a shutout with Bryzgalov. They've lost some scoring for sure. However, they have some new faces with upside like Schenn and Simmonds who will make a difference in time for the playoffs. Playoffs are called tighter as you know. The Flyers will not win the Atlantic but will make the playoffs in 2012. I think they are better equipped for the spring which is all that matters anyhow.

Cheers Magnum, I remembered your dislike for Carter. I kind of figured Carter was just a salary purge to get Brzgalov, but really was puzzled why Richards went as well. I think in the end you guys will love Shenn. I do think the Sabres and Flyers will rule the east next year. What do you think Buffalo v Philly in the Eastern Conference finals. CAN'T WAIT!!!!!

Although I'd love to see Spezza, he's due about $7mil this season and he's not a RFA and has a no trade clause Frown

We need to make sure and re-sign Enroth, Gragnani, and Sekara, which hopefully should not take over $4-4.5mil. Kotalik and Pommers have no trade clauses and their 3.0 and 5.3 mil respectively...and who would be willing to take on Hecht and his $3.5mil? Maybe he was the bait to lure Erhoff in the Deutsche connection.

Anyways, thrilled about landing Erhoff!!! Can't wait to see what the Pegula era brings next!!!

Happy Holidays LK. I am an old school Flyers fan and have ranted about Carter all year. He is a 6'4 creampuff who REFUSES to crash the nets like other former 6'4 Flyers with guts like the Legion of Doom. Carter lives and dies by the long wrister. Carter takes more shots than just about anyone. His shooting percentage is poor because he just sits back and shoots the long wristers as stated. I've wanted him gone for years. He has had 4 postseasons to make his mark and has come up small 4 times regardless of injuries. Somehow he avoided regular season injuries so the guy IMO is a chump and he can spend 10 years in Ohio putting up meaningless regular season stats which is his MO anyhow.

I liked Mike Richards but he wasn't right this spring. I think the Versteeg trade screwed everyone up but Richards couldn't handle captaincy. Wasn't crazy about the trade but we need a goalie which we haven't had since Hextall's peak in the late 1980's.

The NHL is a copycat league. Last summer, teams figured an elite goalie wasn't needed after Niemi won the Cup. This year, Boston returned to Old School hockey with suffocating defense and great goaltending. It seems Buffalo is trying to follow Boston's blueprint thus far. You have certainly upgraded your defense with your 2 acquisitions.

The Red Wings fans get it.

Remember, Detroit was, for 20 years prior to the late '90s, a total hockey wasteland.  Now they've made the playoffs for 20 years straight...the best pro sports dynasty ever.

And, Detroit, like Buffalo, isn't the sexiest of destinations.  Let's be real.

But Detroit had to spend a lot of money to play rent a Russian in the late '90s...that coupled with smart drafting, built a dynasty in Detroit because players took less money later on to be part of something special.

Look at the Buffalo drafts.  They have the AHL Rookie of the Year for the last 3 years in Ennis, Gerbe, and Adam...and that's not counting Gragnani, who was called up for the playoffs and was their best player against Philadelphia, or Enroth, who really was a big part in getting the Sabres in the playoffs when Miller was hurt.  Doesn't count Foligno and Kassian either, who looked pretty good in international competions.

Stafford resigned for $4 million/yr when his 4 hat tricks and 31 goals would have gotten him big interest in a depleted free agent market.  Gerbe re-signed for $1.4 million a year over 3 years...really a steal given the way he finished the year.  Regheir waved his no-trade clause.

We may be seeing the creation of the next Hockeytown.

Sabres sign Ehrhoff to long-term contract

So Erhoff gets banished to Buffalo.  Interesting.  I wasn't feeling the Erhoff to Detroit vibe after all this action on his rights.  My guess is it won't be Wiz either if Holland is waiting on Ryan Suter next year.  Looks like a cheapo, incentive-laden, rent-a-Jova one year special for the Wings.
