Sabres sign Ehrhoff to long-term contract

Less than 24 hours before acquiring his rights and just hours before free agency begins, the Buffalo Sabres have signed defenseman Christian Ehrhoff to a long-term contract, the team announced Thursday evening.

Bob McKenzie of TSN reports the deal could be for 10 years and $40 million.

Since turning down an offer to stay with the Canucks, Ehrhoff had his rights sent to the Islanders. After trying to sign him to a deal, Isles GM Garth Snow accepted that he would not be able to entice Ehrhoff to sign, he shipped his rights to Buffalo and a match was made.

Now Ehrhoff joins a retooled defensive corps in Buffalo that includes newcomer Robyn Regehr. Add in young Tyler Myers and they have the makings of a very nice blue line.

Ehrhoff brings plenty of offense from the back end, scoring 14 goals with 36 assists last season for the Presidents' Trophy-winning Canucks.

The Detroit Red Wings figured to be big contenders for Ehrhoff's services but they never got the chance. Instead they will have to look at the rest of the defensive market, which gets even paltrier without Ehrhoff available.

You'll still be looking up in the standings at the Bruins.  Cry

Everyone has a different point of view on long term contracts.  You talk to us Buffalo fans and I think in general we like to see the commitment after watching so many really good players just let go because we failed to lock them up when we had the chance.  The Sabres were becoming a farm team for the rest of the league.

FINALLY!  This is so refreshing to see an owner actually walking the walk.  Pegula is the man and the buzz is all about Buffalo.  He must be the best sales man on earth.  He gets Regeyer to waive his no trade clause and then locks up Ehrhoff for 10 years and 4 million per which isn't that much at all when he was hours from free agency and the best D man in FA by far.  Wow.  1 great forward (Richards) and they will be a contender this season.  What a D:

Ehrhoff
Regeyer
Myers
Leopold
Gragnani
Sekera
Weber

Yeah, like I said he's an excellent player and would have looked good in Detroit but he's not a player worth a 10 year deal.

The Sabres are not the Red Wings.  There is a new era in Buffalo, (and, I believe, in the NHL), and the Sabres' new owner is doing more than instilling excitement.  He is taking concrete steps to demonstrate that he is very serious about winning, (not attempting to win), multiple SC's.  Buffalo has always been recognized as a great place to play once a player arrives in town.

The same cannot be said about perspective acquisitions that often need a little "convincing".  If I were a FA player, I would be very impressed that Buffalo convinced two very good blueliners to come to town.  The Sabres may have given an overly generous ten year term, but it's not absurd.  Meanwhile, this gives them enough cap space to still go after a top center.

Signing Ehrhoff may prove to be the clincher to bring more talent to Buffalo.  He may not be worth a ten year deal for Detroit; for Buffalo I think it's a heist since it leaves an extra $1MMin cap space compared to expectations.  And, as you noted:
Erhoff is a very nice player.
  I agree.

rothes.....the fact is 4 million in 3 years won't be anything for what he brings to the team.  the cap went up 4/5 mil this season alone.  Essentially if it goes up by that much in the next 2 years the cap will be 72 mil and he's only 4 of it.  An NHL team starts 12 forwards, 6 defenseman and a goalie....17 players.  If you have 17 players all making 4 mil a year, you'd be under the cap.  I'd say 4 million for his services, regardless of what Pegula's checkbook looks like is a pretty solid deal.  I'm also wagering that if you got this guy at only 4 mil when the Islanders offered closer to 5 a year....you'd be pretty happy too.  Take your hating somewhere else

Seeing the Isles are 0 for 2 in long term deals, it was probably best they didn't reach a deal with Ehrhoff. You guys only have another 10 years left with DiPietro! From my calculations he should start in about 100 games during that stretch, 80 games if Brent Johnson is involved.

He looked very soft in the Finals against the Bruins and showed very little heart.
Bad signing for the Sabres.

He was hurt in the playoffs and tried to play through it.  This is a good deal for both sides.

Sabres sign Ehrhoff to long-term contract

First off, I am a life-long Flyers fan, but this is a very nice signing by Buffalo. I live here in Las Vegas and bet and watch a ton of hockey and I can tell you right now, That I am going to head to the Sports Book tomorrow and lay money on buffalo to win the Cup next year! Great goalie, talented young nucleus, solid coach and the most imprtant thing to winning the Cup is a having not super-star defenseman, but having defensement that are solid and deep and Buffalo has exactly that! Keep an eye on toronto as well!
