Sabres sign Ehrhoff to long-term contract

Less than 24 hours before acquiring his rights and just hours before free agency begins, the Buffalo Sabres have signed defenseman Christian Ehrhoff to a long-term contract, the team announced Thursday evening.

Bob McKenzie of TSN reports the deal could be for 10 years and $40 million.

Since turning down an offer to stay with the Canucks, Ehrhoff had his rights sent to the Islanders. After trying to sign him to a deal, Isles GM Garth Snow accepted that he would not be able to entice Ehrhoff to sign, he shipped his rights to Buffalo and a match was made.

Now Ehrhoff joins a retooled defensive corps in Buffalo that includes newcomer Robyn Regehr. Add in young Tyler Myers and they have the makings of a very nice blue line.

Ehrhoff brings plenty of offense from the back end, scoring 14 goals with 36 assists last season for the Presidents' Trophy-winning Canucks.

The Detroit Red Wings figured to be big contenders for Ehrhoff's services but they never got the chance. Instead they will have to look at the rest of the defensive market, which gets even paltrier without Ehrhoff available.

$4Million a season is not a lot when you are, I repeat again, a billionare.

Well I guess it's a good thing for the rest of the NHL that there's a little thing called the salary cap.

Sabres sign Ehrhoff to long-term contract

Look at it this way-if he's a bust, well, they can buy him out, right? NYR just canned Drury's dead weight deal.

Hopefully someone on these boards can clarify the buyout policy in the NHL. Because yes, the Rangers just bought out Drury's deal, but wasn't he entering the final year of his deal? The thing that confuses me on it is the Islanders. If a team could just buy out a player's contract, why haven't they bought out Yashin's contract?

Sabres sign Ehrhoff to long-term contract

It was widely reported in the local newspapers that CE turned down a very similar to Bieksa type deal. Same term, very near same dollars.

Living in the Vancouver area, I have heard ohhhhhh sooooo much hot air about both. Neither of the two could touch Hamhuis as a D man.

What's wrong (in the salary cap era, where $$$$$$ dictate a lot of deals that otherwise look sketchy) with a 3 or 4 dman, young enough to play 6 or 7 good years for yer favorite team, at 4 mill a season?

Look at it this way-if he's a bust, well, they can buy him out, right? NYR just canned Drury's dead weight deal. I also hear the new Buffalo owner is beaucoup au dollars.

New owner not afraid of spending to improve the team. Ehrhoff skates well and has a great shot. Buffalo addressed their defenseman need well with this addition.

Now is the time for players to get these 10 year contracts before next CBA which will probably outlaw them if bettman gets his way of three year max length contracts.

Nice pay day for the German d-man, good for him and the Sabres.

Sabres sign Ehrhoff to long-term contract

Don't get me wrong, I think Erhoff is a very nice player and I wanted the Wings to sign him on July 1st.  He would have been a great replacement for Rafalski.   But.... A 10 YEAR DEAL AT 4 MILLION BUCKS PER SEASON?  I fully expected him to get at least a 5 year deal like Bieksa did.... but TEN????  No thanks... that's a little steep if you ask me.  Yeah, like I said he's an excellent player and would have looked good in Detroit but he's not a player worth a 10 year deal....

Sabres sign Ehrhoff to long-term contract

Love it; for too many years the Sabres have stood on the sidelines and have been spectators at this time of the year.  Let's go after a Center next and I believe that Buffalo will ba strong favorite in the East.  Also, I'm happy to see that the Amerks are back with the Sabres organization.  It's a thrill to have a team owner who is truly a fan of his team and respects its history.
