Free-agent tracker: Leafs make move, add Connolly

It took more than 24 hours, but the Toronto Maple Leafs, no strangers to free-agent signings, spent their first dollars on a free agent, signing Tim Connolly for two years, $9.5 million, according to Darren Dreger of TSN.

The Maple Leafs were among the favorites to sign Brad Richards, who ended up going to the Rangers. GM Brian Burke took some criticism for not being present at the presentation to Richards, instead spending Canada Day overseas with Canadian soldiers in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

The Leafs needed to find a center and wanted it to be Richards. Once they missed out, they turned their attention straight to Connolly, most recently with the Sabres. The 10-year veteran has spent the past eight seasons in Buffalo, notching career highs of 18 goals (in 2008-09) and 65 points (2009-10). He is coming off a 13-goal, 29-assist season.

It seems to be a bit high for Connolly, $4.75 million annually, but Toronto had money to spend and needed to grab a center. Plus, the risk is minimized a bit with just a two-year contract instead of something in the four- or five-year range.

Free-agent tracker: Leafs make move, add Connolly

HPTERLAND, why would you want Ovechkin to give up the captaincy? I agree, them and the stars probably having the best free-agent period. I have seen Ovechkin play in perso against the wings, and i watched all of his playoff games and i dont feel he is not deserving or that there is someone better suited for the captaincy on that team.  I think with the little success they had in the playoffs that Ovechkin was mostly responsible for that success, i think he got bailed on by his teammates and the goaltending stunk. Vokoun is a killer who catches with the off-hand he is going to give people fits again with a good team in front of him. Im sad Detroit didnt try to ink him, he killed us for years.

Caps ae the winner so far by a wide margin.  Now have 2 vg starting goalies-one young; one vet.  Varly gone regardless.  Now Vokoun (better and no health issues) there to start or back up Neuvirth.  Impoved so much ondefense as well as at forward.  Love moves.  What have they lost?  Nothing.  Hamrlick insterad of Poti and Hanaran.  When they sign Alzner they are set.  would love if Ovechkin gave up captaincy to veteran.  Maybe Knuble.

I must say the Florida Panthers have made some good looking moves, and they are coached well. The skipper down there is the guy who coached my city's junior team to the memorial cup. He's as good as it gets imo. Fortunately good or bad he now has the players to make a run at the playoffs, anything less would be a failure, and will most likely cost him his job. Such is the nature of coaching in the bigs.

Being a Bruins fan and having won it all, my outlook is much broader. I no longer spend every second, asleep or awake, wondering what my team is up to. I know we'll be contenders for the ultimate again. It is nice to be able to sift through other teams preperations and make an opinion.

So whether you want to hear it or not, I predict the Panthers, not only make the playoffs, but win atleast the first round, unless its against the Bruins.

Enjoy your summer all, and if there's no football, relax, its only three months until hockey starts again!!

Man, Stamkos's contract talks are killing the Bolts. Losing Gagne and Bergenheim hurts.
I wouldn't worry too much about them. Gagne can't stay healthy and hasn't been the same player since getting injured. Bergenheim is an average player with one really good post-season to his credit. So for around $3 to $3.5 per, they are replaceable.

Man, Stamkos's contract talks are killing the Bolts. Losing Gagne and Bergenheim hurts. I would have loved to see Richards come back too. His deal needed to get done before July 1 for the Bolts to have so much as a chance of making any good signings.

As for the league though, wow. The movement has been incredible! I'm already looking forward to next year. The Panthers and Capitals made some nice moves. The southeast division is going to be crazy!

Teams are definitely showing some improvement. Really love the way Florida stepped up to the plate. Washington made some strides as well. Especially, getting Vokoun on a deal for $1.5 million for next season. Ian White and Mike Commodor eto Detroit came as a surprise too. Gotta love free agency.

Free-agent signings: Canucks keep Salo, Higgins

Ha! You're right! After putting all the names together, they all sort of came together as one. Thanks.
