Earlier this summer the Edmonton Oilers re-acquired one of the most popular players in recent franchise history, Ryan Smyth, in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings. Smyth had requested a move out of Southern California to be closer to his home in Alberta. In return for Smyth, who left the Kings with somewhat limited options, the Oilers sent them forward Colin Fraser and a seventh-round draft pick, after Los Angeles general manager Dean Lombardi had previously rejected a deal involving Gilbert Brule due to injury concerns.

Fraser didn't exactly have a clean bill of health either, having fractured a foot last season while blocking a shot. According to Helene Elliot of the Los Angeles Times, Lombardi said he knew of the injury but was told by the Oilers staff that Fraser was just days away from being cleared for hockey activities. Once the trade was completed and the Kings doctors examined Fraser, they found a number of unexpected issues, including an unhealed fracture, a cyst and a blood disorder which could keep him out for up to four months. None of this, as you can imagine, amused Lombardi.

When combined with the injury concerns to Brule in the original deal, Lombardi was left with some sour feelings toward the Oilers front office and said, via Elliot:

"The bottom line for me, I would have rather invested my money with Bernie Madoff than invest in Edmonton’s word.”
The Oilers will reportedly not publically respond to Lombardi's comment.

This would be how relations between two teams turn sour.

In the aftermath of the trade, when the Kings initially voiced their concerns over the injury, Oilers general manager Steve Tambelinni stood by the deal and insisted that Los Angeles knew Fraser's medical history prior to the trade and that none of it should be a surprise. The Kings, naturally, disagreed with that assessment and wanted to rework the trade. That never happened and they are now exploring their legal options.

In the meantime, it would probably be a safe assumption to think these two teams won't be involved in any deals together in the near future -- at least not until this situation sorts itself out. Or, worst case scenario, when either team (or both) has a change in its front office and the two clubs can start their relationship over with a clean slate.

Kevin Lowe is behind this, make no mistake. He's as sneaky and untrustworthy as they come. Was it not Lowe who made the contract offer to restricted free-agent Kesler a few years back when Burke was GM of the Canucks? It looks like Tambellini is taking lessons from the "master". This can only bring bad karma for an organization that can hardly afford any. Stupid, petulant and childish move for sure. No class. I feel bad for Oiler fans.

I agree with everything you said except for Montreal being classy in the past maybe but not lately.

Memo to Dean: You know that you pick up and pay premium $$$ for injured players. You also got fleeced big time by Tambellini in the Penner trade. Why go back to the same well, or at least hang tough and keep Smyth. He would have played hard. Next up- and offer sheet for Doughty from the Islanders, who have the cap space to swallow up the space that was created by dumping Smyth.

I believe DL here though. The deal was already rejected once b/c of Brule's injury concerns. Sounds like the league office will get involved.

Recently, Canada has not been a model of civility in hockey. Their incorrugible fans had a field day looting stores, overturning police cars and setting fire to them while their GMs are being jerks! The Kings did Smyth and the Oilers a huge favor by trading him for nothing more than a bag of chips. And now we find out that the bag of chips has expired. I suggest that the NHL contract ALL Canadian hockey teams. They are either inept, ruthless or clueless. Oh wait...I think Montreal is always a classy organization...and they win too. Ok..contract all Canadian teams except for Montreal.

Did the inept Oilers GM explain why Lombardi would knowingly trade for a severely injured mediocre player? I certainly do not!

@Sensrdone...You do realize that Kevin Lowe is NOT the gm of the Oilers right?  The gm is in fact Steve Tambellini at the current moment, and it was he who made the move... Not Lowe.

ya.... why wouldn't your team doctors do an evaluation on the player in question before making the trade.  If everything was out in the open, there should've been no reason for Edmonton to deny a request such as that.  Poor decision making by the Kings if you ask me.  Let Smyth go cry like a little girl in Edmonton anyways.  L.A is gonna let them know in the regular season what it's all about.

They do the health physical evaluation AFTER the trade??? Really?  With no contingency clauses?  REALLY???

Wow. I make a minute fraction of what these guys make and all of my job offers are contingent on passing a physical. If I'm 'owned' by an agency their payment is also contingent on my healthy pass.

The KIngs don't need the league to reverse the trade, they need somebody to teach them contracts.

Clearly the Kings were given damaged goods and that ain't right. The NHL should step in on the Kings behalf and make the Oilers offer another player of equal value, or revoke the trade if the Oilers don't comply....

kevin Lowe is a sleezy character to say the least, he is comparable to that other douch GM Bryan Murray.
But sly brian has never won at this level.
