Parise

By: Adam Gretz

On Friday evening New Jersey Devils forward Zach Parise became the latest player to avoid arbitration (which has been a common theme this summer).

It was announced by the club that the Devils and their star forward had reached an agreement on a one-year contract, and would continue to work toward a long-term deal. Parise's hearing was scheduled for August 3. According to TSN's Bob McKenzie the deal is worth $6 million, which is an increase from the $5 million he made last season in the final year of a four-year contract that carried a cap hit of $3.1 million.

Pairse, who just turned 27 this week, missed most of last season due to a knee injury and appeared in just 13 games for a disappointing New Jersey team that stumbled out of the gate, before finally hitting its stride in the second half. He scored three goals before suffering a torn meniscus in a game against the Los Angeles Kings on October 30.

A first-round pick by the Devils in 2003, Parise has developed into one of the best left wingers in the NHL and had scored at least 30 goals in four consecutive seasons before his injury-shortened campaign in 2010-11. His best performance came during the 2008-09 season when he scored 45 goals, good enough for third best in the league, to go with 49 assists.

If the two sides can't agree to a long-term deal Parise will be eligible for unrestricted free agency following this season.

Umm, did I miss something here? Parise is one of the top players on the team and they only settled on a one-year deal? They couldn't have gotten a long-term deal done in five days before the hearing?

Hate to break this to you Devils fans but when a player gets taken to arbitration that means more times than not that player will be playing somewhere else next season. The process is a strain on the player/management relationship.

SlumpPart did u even manage to read the article.  They did'nt go to arbitration other then that minor detail ur comment makes sense.

Probably better for everybody this way.   Noboby lost anything in this deal yet.   Good number, good contract imo.    If he proves worthwhile Lou will sign him long-term for top dollar, in the meantime, nobody is going to have to worry about what kind of effort he puts into the season.

Good point however, you also have to realize that the Devils have more bad money (3M for White and 3M for Salvadore) coming off the books next season. Lou is likley trying to work his way around it for now to skate around the existing cap issues until he can work that long term deal for next year. If that doesn't happen by the deadline, expect a blockbuster deal.

Could be wrong but you may see Parise traded instead of resigned by the Devils long term at the deadline next season. If they can't resign him long term trading him before they lose him for nothing would be the wise decision.

This guy is way to good of a player to get only a one year contract at his age and skill level.

Good work Lou! Now let's get him signed long term and find an eventual replacement for Marty and the Devils will be back to dominance.
