Kesler

On Tuesday the Vancouver Canucks announced center Ryan Kesler underwent successful hip surgery and could be sidelined for as long as 10-12 weeks.

Said general manager Mike Gillis, “After consultation with our team physicians following the playoffs, it was deemed that Ryan would require a procedure on his hip. We expect a full recovery and determined this procedure would best serve both Ryan and the team’s long term goals.”

Assuming the timeline of 10-12 weeks is how long it will take for a complete recovery, it will force him to miss all of training camp and the preseason, as well as the start of the regular season. Kesler is coming off a sensational 2010-11 season with the Canucks where he scored a career high 41 goals while also taking home the Selke Award, which is given to the NHL's best defensive forward. He had been a finalist the two previous seasons, having finished second in 2010 and third in 2009.

The 26-year-old Kesler, who was a first-round pick by the Canucks in 2003, has been one of the best defensive forwards in the NHL for a couple of years now, while also being able to chip in around 20 goals on the offensive end. This past season the goal numbers skyrocketed to the point where he finished fourth in the league, trailing only Corey Perry, Steven Stamkos and Jarome Iginla.

His teammate, Daniel Sedin, was tied with him for the fourth spot in the league and the top spot on the team.

He's one of Vancouver's best all-around players and missing him for any point of time is a large blow to the team.

This spells BIG TROUBLE for Vancouver .... between Kesler and Burrows, they're the heart and soul of that team.

This guy is one of the few great ALL-AROUND players in the NHL.  Guys like Malkin and the Sedin twins will grab the headlines because they score those highlight reel goals with pretty no-look passes...only a few guys (Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kesler) do it as well as he does, and not just on BOTH ends of the ice but off the ice as well.  He represents his team and country with class and dignity.

As a Boston fan I don't have really have anything good to say about the Canucks (and my guess is outside of Montreal and Vancouver not a lot of people do have anything good to say), I truly marveled at what this guy brought to the rink every night.  Had he not been hurt I highly doubt my Bruins win the series.  His playoffs until the moment he got hurt were the best I have ever watched...that includes having watched Ray Bourque, Chara, Timmy Thomas.

I wish him a speedy recovery.  And wish he never again plays for the Stanley Cup unless its for Boston, because he's too tough to play against.

Uhm thats if Kesler went under the knife this week. Perhaps Kesler went under the knife shortly after the finals and the NHL awards were done... then that puts him on line for training camp and the start of the season..

Yeah, and maybe he went under the knife before last season even started so he's already fully recovered.  I'm guessing we won't see too much of him in October, though.

KESLER had a great year and deserved the Selke. He should of won the Selke last year IMO.  Tough kid who can really finish his checks, not like the swedish bikini team.  Good luck on a full recovery.

At least he won't miss too much of the season.   That's a shame he needed surgery, better now than later.
