BourqueBy: Adam Gretz

If you're a gamer and patiently waiting to pick up a copy of EA Sports NHL '12 when it hits the shelves in September, you're going to have an opportunity to use some of the NHL's greatest all-time players in this year's version of the game.

On Friday EA Sports announced the first three legends that will appear in the game: Wayne Gretzky, Boston Bruins great Ray Bourque, and Chris Chelios sporting his Chicago Blackhawks gear (he also spent many years -- and won Stanley Cups -- with the Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings).

They still need to announce the remaining six legends, and based on the images they've released (blank silhouettes) there is at least one goaltender in the group, and Patrick Roy seems like he would be a solid bet.

Personally, and if EA Sports had a sense of humor about this, I would love to see Jeremy Roenick make the cut, simply because his spot in the '94 version of the game is regarded as one of the best video game players ever (yes, people track these things). It was also part of an iconic moment in 1990's popular culture in the film Swingers (adult language in this clip). Unlikely? Sure. But I can still have my sentimental dreams.

Of course, narrowing it down to just nine players (the three we already know of plus the six yet-to-be-announced) is a difficult task that will never please everybody.

You can check out a quick trailer that helps us get an idea as to what the legends will look like in action over at the EA Sports website.

If thats the case then Mario, maybe Al Macinnis and Pavel Bure would be some of the others.
Please Smile, especially Bure. I always loved watching him play. He was so fast and one of the best stickhandlers in the game during the 90's. Mario's a no-brainer and Al Macinnis would be cool as well.
if they do have older guys than Orr is a no brainer along with Howe and the Golden Jet.
Definitely Orr and Howe. Gotta have both of those legends in the game 'cause they are both in the top 3 or 4 all time and in the discussion for best all time.
more 80's Oilers wouldnt suprise me with the sick numbers they put up Messier, Kurri, Coffey etc.
Meh.

The Video clearly shows the legs of a Penguins player... So Mario is a definite. Also, stopped at a gaming store yesterday, and they had the coming soon box for NHL on the shelf, and it shows a Shadowed out player in a #88 Flyers shirt.. So Lindros is there.
Ugh, I would have left Lindros out of there and used Parent if they were going to pick a Flyers "Legend".

Or is it "Legends who played during the years of EA hockey."
This will likely be the case. Not likely to have Orr, Big M, Morenz, Sawchuk, Howe, Richard brothers, or even Guy Lafleur. Pioneers and legends of yore are often forgotten. Mario will most certainly be in there, he was the coverboy for NHL 2002.
That's not necessarily true.  EA Sports has done usually a great job in picking the best all-time players to represent the all-time greats in different games.

When EA did the HOF Edition for Madden several years back, they did a great job in going back and picking some of the all-time greats.  AFC versus NFC, one might think the NFC QB would have been Montana, but it wasn't, it was Tarkenton.  The HOF teams they put together were pretty awesome in those games.  I think they'll pick some appropriate players for this one.

I would think that since there will only be 9 players, that they won't cover a team twice.  So you might be right that there won't be a Bobby Orr because Ray Bourque is already in the game.  I could see Gordie Howe in the game.  As for the goalie?  Quite a few good names you could pick from.  Patrick Roy, Dominic Hasek, Bernie Parent all come to mind.

What I don't think we'll see is names of playes that most of their career before the expansion when it was only the Original 6.

So, there is 5. And if people believe that Roy is the goalie (or maybe Hasek?). That makes 6..

Who else? Roenick? Yzerman? Sakic? Federov? That would make a pretty solid 9. It looks like it is definitely playes from the video game generation, so sorry Orr, LaFleur, Richard....

Didn't Bourque have to leave Boston to win the cup?

How utterly great to have two Bruin defensemen on the roster.

Because, of course, Bobby Orr will be one of the legends.

Right?

Or is it "Legends who played during the years of EA hockey."

Which is cool.

If they define their parameters.

And then add Bobby Orr.

Mike Bossy?, Denis Potvin? Yes I'm an Islanders fan, but they were NHL legends too...
