Sidney Crosby could be out even longer, three separate sources told Josh Rimer of NHL Home Ice on SiriusXM Radio. According to Rimer's report, the only information is that Crosby might not be ready to start the season.

But then there was this from Kevin Allen at USA Today on Saturday:

[Crosby} has not talked to the media about his injury this summer, but the word is that he is training and planning as if he will be ready for the start of training camp. The NHL brings its Stars to New York for media interviews every September, and Crosby is planning to be there.

Earlier this summer there were even rumors that Crosby was mulling a very early retirement. Those were clearly way too premature and were taken with the biggest grains of salt you can find.

The conflicting reports are tough on the ol' sanity section of the brain. It's like a tug of war that makes this whole situation maddening. The silence from Crosby and the Penguins, while completely understandable, contributes to the angst and speculation. Silence might be golden, but in cases like this it's rotten.

While these reports should cause some alarm, it's certainly not panic time. I'll wait until the team comes out or Sid himself saying it will be a longer wait before fretting too much. But the idea of the NHL being without arguably its top star for longer is not good news. Even if you dislike Crosby -- and I know a vast number do -- you can't honestly think it's anything but bad for hockey, let alone Pittsburgh. We'll know for sure when camps start up next month.

Until then, we'll wait and wade through the rubbish.

He'll play. I don't expect him to miss game 1 of the season and I think he'll play 70+ games. Just my take.

A lot of ignorant posts going up on this topic.  Where did all the anti-gay comments come from?  Several Flyers fans have been total idiots on here.  Can you guys honestly say you don't want to play and beat Pittsburgh when they're at full strength?  Let's keep the bigoted comments off of here, show some class people.

Folks, this is exactly what I'm talking about! I was kidding about the Red Wings analogy..insert any name there. But my point is - for someone to write something so pitiful, they must be completely miserable, and that is for us all to enjoy! Thanks for contributing Ejay!

Panther Lair - embrace the haters! It's more fun reading their stupidity than you realize. And best of all, it's all free! It's as much fun as putting Red Wing fans on a short bus without windows!

Crosby is the most over rated player in the NHL. There are two players on the Detroit Red Wings that are better. Not to mention Alex Ovechkin . Besides Datsyuk, hes the most exciting player in the world. "crushercraig"

No comment needed to respond here. Just wanted everyone to have another look at a ten year old's comments. The only thing missing here is him telling us if we don't let him play quarterback, he'll take his ball and go home. Sheer Genious.

Say what you want about Sidney. All your ridiculous, uneducated, hate filled rants about this kid. How he is a " fag",  how he cries and whines and all the other bullshit. There is not a one of you that spews this crap that wouldn't be turning cartwheels if he was trade to your underachieving team. If you deny it you are either lying or just a plain moron. He has a significant injury and the NHL WILL be worse off without him. Bet on it.

I am not a big fan of Crosby but as a hockey player you have to respect his talent. If he is hurting to the extent that he feels he cannot play then that is his business. Only he knows what his symptoms are and how he truely feels. Leave the guy alone and if he feels he can eventually continue with his NHL career I'm sure he will. The quality of his life after hockey is what is important to he and his family, he is still a young man and has a long life ahead of him whether it is on the ice or not.

crosby overrated? HAHAHAHA..... he was running away with the scoring title last year with chris kunitz and pascal dupuis as his linemates before he was injured.... every GM in the league would pick him over anyone else to start a franchise (before his career threatening injury, obviously)... ovechkin was the only other player on his level, but he seems to have lost a bit of his scoring touch the last couple years, when crosbys is getting better every year... people who hate crosby are jealous of him, theres no other reason to hate him, hes modest and well spoken and never gets into any trouble off the ice... his first year in the league, he was known to whine to the refs, but he doesnt anymore.... fans still have the "CROSBY IS A WHINER" mentality though and wont let it go.... the "crosby dives!" claim is ridiculous as well...ive watched pretty much every game crosbys played in since hes entered the nhl and ive never seen one blatant dive...have i seen him try to draw a penalty? of course. EVERY player in the league tries to draw penalties. if you get high sticked, you throw your head back to let the referee know what just happened... if you want to watch some divers, youtube alex ovechkin and sean avery
