The Philadelphia Flyers have re-signed young forward James van Riemsdyk to an extension, helping them bypass restricted free agency next season.

While the team didn't say how long the contract is for other than being a multi-year deal, Van Riemsdyk spilled the beans himself, tweeting about his delight of the deal.

"Excited to sign a 6 year extension with the @NHLFlyers, love playing in Philly," Van Riemsdyk said. "Want to thank mr snider and flyers management for treating me well and showing confidence in me #firstclassorganization."

Scott Burnside of ESPN reports the deal is for $25.5 million over the six years or an annual cap hit of $4.25 million. That's a pretty hefty deal for JVR at this point, but obviously they are investing in what they think he will become, not who he is now.

A deal at that length will help the sides avoid the restricted free agency process altogether, surely a welcome result for both parties. As this summer has reminded, that can be an ugly fight. Already under contract for next season, the deal will keep JVR in black and orange until he's nearly 30.

The 22-year-old New Jersey native has shown plenty of promise in his two seasons in Philly. Last season he scored 21 goals and chipped in 19 more assists in the regular season before scoring seven goals in 11 games for the Flyers in the playoffs. He will be one of the players called on to help fill the scoring void left by Mike Richards' and Jeff Carter's exits.

It's been a good summer for JVR. First there was the appearance in an upcoming Judd Aptatow film, now this. Not bad for the offseason.

A native of the Jersey shore, Van Riemsdyk grew up a fan of the Rangers. Not any more.

A bit of an overpayment for a guy that is still for the most part unproven.  His upside is there, hopefully he can make strides this season.

Also, he is now getting paid more than Giroux.

Love this deal. Nobody will be complainging about the 4.25million when they see JVR go all out this year. He knows now with richards and carter that this is his and girouxs team and homgren paid him accordingly. I think Jvr is the best player on a very talented team and IMO we will see all that talent come out this year with a 30/30 year. Congratulations JVR, and now go show everyone that you deserve that kinda money...

GO FLYERS!!!!

Anyone worried about the length or dollars should refer back to Jeff Carter. Long term deal, a ton of money and no longer here.

I have a guess about the timing.
I could be wrong, but I think it's about making the team aware that JVR and Giroux are the new core of the team, along with Bryzgalov. I wish the Pronger deal wasn't so ---- long. I'm the same age as he and Timonen are. I guess after Richards and Carter left Holmgren wants to show how solid the identity of the core is. Hopefully Schenn and Couturier will also be in that core,
The other timing factor is that this looks like a transition year no matter what. They had prior contracts like Laperriere, Timonen, Pronger, etc. that were a style existing before Bryzgalov. Hartnell isn't a UFA for 2 more seasons. Voracek and Jagr on forward and Coburn and Carle on D are up after the season.
They will likely have to sign one of those D-men and trade the other, see who meshes well and eventually trade Bobrovsky for their most glaring weakness. The best D-man to be a free agent next year is Kronwall, who should definitely be re-signed. Therefore an upgrade in D will be needed in 2 years when Timonen is set to expire. I think the trade deadline of next season is the soonest they can go all-out again. By then the best case would be for Giroux, JVR, Schenn, Couturier, maybe Simmonds and Voracek to be the core with Briere as the on-ice leader and Talbot, Betts, etc. filling out the forwards. I'd love to see another impact forward but with the age of Pronger and Timonen, they'll need a new D leader.
