By Brian Stubits

David Steckel was a member of the Washington Capitals up until March of last year, so he knows a thing or two about a couple of the bigger stories/dramas of the hockey summer.

Skating at the Caps practice facility as he and his wife are back in the District to try and sell their Virginia house, Steckel took a little time to talk with the Washington Post's Tarik El-Bashir about a few lingering items. One regards the health of Sidney Crosby, the other the criticism levied on Alexander Semin by former Caps enforcer Matt Bradley.

First, to the Crosby treatment. Remember, it was Steckel that hit Crosby in the Winter Classic, rendering the Penguins star concussed. Since then, the argument has raged of whether or not it was a dirty play or intentional. Steckel, now with the Devils, says neither is the case.

"I had no intent to injure him. I feel just as bad as anybody. I don't want to see anybody out of the game for that long. It's bad enough with everything that's going around with other guys [and] head [injuries]. It's just so uncertain. I feel bad. I wish him the best. I don't wish that upon anybody."

Here's the hit heard 'round the NHL world in case you need a refresher.

To me it never appeared to be a malicious hit by any stretch. It appears to be an unfortunate accident. But it's certainly a debatable topic and the true verdict is always in the eye of the beholder in such situations.

However the majority of the talk with El-Bashir centered on Bradley's remarks about Semin, ya know the ones that Semin "just doesn't care?" Well here's what Steckel had to say on Wednesday.

“It's not like he went out and told lies,” Steckel said. “[He] didn't really say anything bad about anybody. He just stated what he felt. ... I don't have anything to say on what Brads said except that he was spot on. He mentioned Ovi, too, just not on a negative side. He hit it on the head for both guys."

It's nowhere near as inflammatory as the route Bradley took, but it's still no ringing endorsement of Semin.

Was Steckel's hit to Sid intentional? Of course not. Anyone who believes it was, is not playing with a full deck. David Steckel is not that type of player. Never has been, never will be.

You're allowed to believe whatever you want to believe, it's your opinion and that's fine.  And personally the more I watch that replay the more confused I get because I can't tell if he meant to hit him or not.  Do I believe Steckel was trying to seriously hurt Crosby and put him out for this long?  Absolutely not.  But can I say that I'm 100 percent sure the hit wasn't intentional?  No I can't, and neither can you.

Buzz, do you honestly believe that he should have been suspended? You cant be serious. You really dont think that it matters if the hit was intentional or not? I dont care what the rule book says. They WILL take that into consideration when evaluating something of that nature. They would not be doing thier job if they didnt. I know alot of Pens and Steelers fans here where I live in Northern Virginia (about 30 miles from DC). Not one of them believe that hit was intentional. You are in the extreme minority on this one Buzz.

I have been a Caps fan for over 30 years. I cant stand the Pens. Simply because they have dashed our Cup dreams time and time and time again. However, I have never wished ill will on ANY of thier players, and I am not about to start now. I really hope Sid can somehow make it back to his full capabilties. He is one of the best in the League, and it is a blow to Hockey lovers everywhere.

BTW...hockeybob, very well said. Great post!

Yea because I am sure that Steckel would come out and say he nailed Sid in the head on purpose. Worthless interview. You're supposed to be responsible for your elbows and blows to the head on the ice. He wasn't. And ALL hockey players know what they are doing. They can easily make it look "incidental."

Most Caps posters have  gotten it all wrong. Steckels hit was a blindside hit and whether he meant to do it purposely or not. Doesnt matter.  Steckel is trying to spin it as a "just in the heat of the battle"type hit. But that doesnt matter either. The two things that are absolutely certain, 1. Steckel did not try to avoid hitting Crosby, and  2. Steckels hit was to the the head. By the way, a suspension was called for,the  rules do not state that a hit in the head has to be on purpose to draw a suspension.  So spin that anyway you like it. For Sid and the Pens fans as well as every hockey fan in the world ,  it just sucks bigtime. Taking out the best player in the world when he was playing above and beyond any other player in the league at that time just plain blows. He was so far ahead of every other player in the scoring race ,  a 20 game scoring streak, magic everynight on the ice,  Crosby was taking his game to another level and if he would have not gotten hurt we could have seen a player  taking a the leap into the realm of "one of the best players ever" types. It would have been nice to see if Sid could have made a run at 200 points. That takes you into the other rhelm, Mario/Waynes rhelm. So Steckel robbed all of hockey a chance to see true greatness.(not just some bum giving  them or just made the statements up to berate Crosby to get under skin. I dont think Semin was trying to play mind games with Sid personally but, In any case it didnt work out.  Right then , I knew right then that this guy was a perfect fit for the Caps.  With the great ate as captain and  a team full of perineial losers, we Pens fans can only hope they keep there team just the way it is. Built for the regular season and bow out when the going gets tough. For the last 20 years the Caps have been cannon fodder for the Pens and we like it that way. Its always fun to watch the Caps implode. vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

I'm going to run out of sympathy real for them real soon when the owners walk all over them...again.

The owners have all the power so I have to agree that yes, they will walk all over the players.  And I just don't believe the NHLPA is strong enough as a union to force the owners to do anything.  In my opinion the NHLPA is the weakest union in professional sports.

Former Capital Steckel talks Crosby hit, Semin

Yet another ex NHL'er was found dead today. That is 3 in 3 months.  These concussions are no joke. I am a Capitals fan and I do not celebrate the injury to Crosby. He may have been one of the greatest players to ever put on a sweater, but we probably now will not even be able to see him in his prime. I just hope he watched what happend to Eric Lindros and what is going on with Savard and just hangs it up. I am sure he has all the money he will ever need.

As for all these ex Caps coming out and trashing Semin. Well, any Capital fan in his right mind will agree with them. He DOES NOT CARE! At least a goos amount of the time. He has crazy skills. Maybe better than Ovie's. But he takes games off and sometimes several at a time. He is a friggin wimp and never stands up for himself or his teammates. He takes the stupidest penalties in all of hockey.

Please George, if anyone makes a legit offer, TRADE HIM!

I do not believe the hit was intentional myself. It is funny that you have a Bungles logo and you are gloating about an injury! I am sure you weren't crying when Kimo ACCIDENTALLY took out Palmer's knee!
